The Story of Elijah Clay. Convict.

In the year 1842 large scale riots took place in Hanley. Staffordshire by the Pottery workers due to a reduction in wages and eventually they were joined by the colliery workers who also had a reduction in wages. Houses were set on fire and windows of officials were broken, the militia was sent for and 50 soldiers arrived in town and were given orders to fire on the crowd, one man was killed and many others injured. 146 men were sent to prison and 54 were transported to Van Diemans land. Elijah Clay a coal miner born 1824 at Hanley the son of John and Penelope Clay was one of the men convicted at Stafford Assizes of riotous conduct and felony and demolishing houses. Elijah Clay sentenced to 10 years was transported on the 24th of November 1842 on the ship John Renwick to Van Diemans Land. (Now called Tasmania). In the 10 years as a convict he learned the trade of a bricklayer and eventually saved enough money for his passage home at the end of his sentence. On the 25th of April 1852 he left Van Diemans Land as a free man travelling from Launceston to Melbourne. Australia on the ship Mariposa and eventually made his way back to his home town of Hanley in Staffordshire. England and in the 1861 census he is listed as a bricklayer aged 34 unmarried and living at 28 Gate Street.Hanley and has a housekeeper Sarah Nicklen age 20. On October 29th 1866 Elijah Clay married Sarah his housekeeper and by the time of the 1881 census they had 5 sons John, George, Thomas, Elijah, Robert and they also had a daughter Sarah. Elijah Clay probably has grandchildren alive today and I wonder if they know his story.
