Clay of Kent

Dover Castle in the County of Kent, Clay's were listed living near the castle in the 1500s and 1600s.

Clay's have been documented in this County since the 1100s.

1215. Oct. 11th to Nov. 30th.  Some barons and knights including Sir Ralph Clay defied King John and seized Rochester Castle  in Kent which was  then laid to seige by the King but after 7 weeks they had to surrender  due to lack of provisions, prisoners were taken and Sir Ralph Clay was sent to Northampton Castle. 1377. April 22nd.  Hugh Bures  to Edmund del Clay and 2 others. Charter of a messuage 250 acres of land, 3 acres of meadow, 12 acres of wood at 50s  rent and a rent of 42 hens and 300 eggs  in Lullingstone Payforer. Kent and all rights in that town. (Ref.- PC 22).

1377. Jan.16th.  Westminster. Commission to Edmund Clay and 3 others to make Inquisition by oath of good men in the county of Kent touchining a complaint by the Prior of Canterbury  that the Abbot of St Augustines. Canterbury has raised the banks at his mill so high as to restrict the water from flowing. (TNA Ref.- Calendar of Patent Rolls page 418).

Four British Servicemen were awarded a crocheted scarf made by Queen Victoria during the Boar War.

One went to Quartermaster Sergeant Major Henry George Clay who was born at Dover in Kent in 1872 the son of Henry and Elizabeth Clay. He enlisted in 2nd Batallion East Surrey Regiment in 1889 and during the South African War he was wounded twice and was involved in the Battle of Spion Kop.

He was awarded the CBE and DCM medals and his scarf is on display at the East Surrey Regimental Museum at Guilford.
