1835. Nov. 21st. On Friday last Thomas Clay of Headington near Oxford was apprehended on suspicion of being the murderer of Thomas Cooper the gamekeeper who was found shot at Woodeaton Wood.He is to stand trial. (Huntingdon, Bedford and Peterborough Gazette).
1836. Thomas Clay murdered Thomas Cooper at the parish of Woodeaton.- Calendar of Prisoners for Trial at Oxford Town Hall. (Oxford History Centre Ref.- QS1836/1/A7/3).
1836. March 11th. Murder.- Thomas Clay was indicted for the wilful murder of Thomas Cooper the gamekeeper for Major Weyland. Elizabeth Cooper the widow of the deceased said he went out with his gun and when he did not come home they searched the wood and found his body. The police found footprints with specific marks which led them to Clay and he was identified by the marks on the bottom of his shoes. The Jury returned a verdict of guilty and Clay said "Sir you are wrong" and that he had nothing to do with it. The Judge proceeded to pass the sentence of death directing that he should be executed on Saturday. Clay a young man of 23 years of age received the sentence with calmness and composure and left the dock with a firm step. (Royal Cornwall Gazette).
