Clay of Worcestershire

Worcester Cathedral on the banks of the River Severn, the earliest part dates from 1084.

1510. Inventory of Thomas Clay alias Taverner of Worcester. Vintner. (Ref.- PC2023).

1601. Robert Cleye married Elizabeth Sparrie an inscription in Clent church reads - "Near to this stone lies the body of John Cleye" This was the infant son of the vicar baptised 26th Sept. 1604 and buried 5th June 1605. Robert Cley was perhaps the first married vicar of Clent. (Ref.- Clent in Puritan Times chapter 1X).

1604. Robert Claye signed his signiture in Clent Parish Register and in 1608.

1619. The only indication of clerical work is in the signiture of Mr Robert Claye curate which beginning in 1619 continues for many years, mentions Hartlebury and Upton. (Records of Upton on Severn)

1640. Mr Claye who had been curate to Dr Miles Smith continued to work under Mr Woodforde he was allowed to retain his office between 3 and 4 years longer than some of the clergy in England and only left when required to sign the Covenant. (Records of Upton- on - Severn page 50).

1813. Worcestershire Quarter Sessions.- Thomas Carpenter of Leigh is the father of child of Ann Clay of Upton on Severn. (Worcester Archives Ref.- 1/1/610/74).

1825. Aug.18th.  Attempted Burglary. - Two men attempted to enter the house of Miss Clay at Wick they got up to the window by means of a ladder but just as they threw the window up Miss Clay heard them and calling loudly to her servant to bring the pistols the villains were  alarmed and ran off. (Worcester Journal).

1826. June 29th. Miss H. Clay wishes to take charge of a few children from 2 to 3 years of age. Terms 15 guineas per year. Contact - Miss H. Clay. Lower Wick. St Johns. (Worcester Journal.).

1827. House for sale at Lower Wick full particulars, contact Miss Clay at Wick. (Newspaper Advertisement).

1829. March 5th. Worcester Court. William Clay age 13 charged with stealing in Kidderminster Market House a silk bag, purse, handkerchief and 5 shillings the property of Mary Ann Hillman of Agborough Farm. The lad cried during the whole of the trial and the jury recommended him to mercy on account of his youth. One weeks solitary confinement and once whipped. (Worcester Journal).

1829. July 25th. William Clay was charged with stealing a cheese at Kidderminster the property of George Broad. (Worcester Herald).

1830. April 29th. On Thursday night a nag horse worth about £15 was stolen from the premises of Mr Thomas Clay of Berrow. Mr Clay had the previous morning only purchased the horse from a neighbour named Bray. (Worcester Journal).

1830. July 15th. The Proprietors of the Droitwich Patent Salt Company will hold their half yeary meeting at their office 79 Lowere Thames Street. Committee - William Clay jnr. (Gazette Newspaper).

1831. Worcestershire Quarter Sessions. William Clay sentenced to 14 years Transportation to New South Wales. Australia. (Ref.- British Convicts Transportation Registers).

1832. June 7th. Elizabeth Child takes the liberty of recommending Clay and Newman as the successors to take over the business of the late John Soule. (Worcester Journal)

1833.July. Two men were charged with stealing from a warehouse a quantity of salt the property of Messrs Clay and Newman. Salt Proprietors of Droitwich and they were sentenced to imprisonment. (Worcester Herald).

1836. Feb.20th. Worcester Petty Sessions. Mr Bearcroft of Leigh charged John Clay a  sawyer with stealing turnips from his field. There had been similar occurrences so Mr Bearcroft's son kept watch for several nights and between 11 and 12 o'clock one night he saw them gathering turnips in his fathers field, he went up to them and saw that Clay's young son had got a quantity in his smock frock he accused them of theft and the father said he thought it no harm to take a few turnips. In Court it was said the young lad was about 9 or 10 years of age and having acted under the influence of his father was discharged but Clay was severely reprimanded for setting such an example before his child and was fined 15 shillings and expenses. 1836. Oct.13th. A few days ago a trow (cargo boat) belonging to Messrs Clay and Newman of the Salt Works. Droitwich performed a voyage to Gloucester with a load of salt of 50 tons unloaded and returned back in 33 hours having completed in that time a distance of 79 miles. We believe the above is by far the quickest voyage that was ever made on the River Severn from the same places. (Worcester Journal).

1837. March. County Petty Sessions. Miss Clay was summoned by Dr Forrester for refusing to pay the sum of £1-18s due to the gentleman in November last. Miss Clay admitted the debt which she was ordered to pay in a week with expenses. (Worcester Journal).

1838. Aug.30th. A serious accident occurred at Droitwich. Sarah Leek a girl of 13 went into the closed yard of Messrs Clay and Newman and in the temporary absence of any workmen was induced by a smaller boy to place a halfpenny in the rollers of some machinery powered by steam  when she tried to grab it back her hand was dragged in and her arm was so badly smashed that amputation took place at Worcester Infirmary. (Worcester Chronicle).

1839. Oct.9th. James Leek was charged with stealing a quantity of coal the property of Messrs Clay and Newman of the Droitwich Salt Company. (Worcester Chronicle).

1842. Jan.22nd. Mary Ann youngest daughter of Mr Joseph Clay of Bradford Street married at Yardley to William Holingshead of Birmingham. (Worcester Herald).

1842. Oct.1st. Benjamin Derby was charged with stealing a pair of shears and some buttons the property of Henry Clay at Great Malvern. (Worcester Herald).

1843. Nov.2nd. Frederick Clay tailor of Hanley Castle preferred a case against the Stewards of the Benevolent Friends Society for having refused to pay him his weekly allowance from the fund he being unwell and unable to work. The Stewards said he had disqualified himself  having measured a customer up for a coat. It was resolved he was entitled to be paid. (Worcester Journal).

1844. Feb.17th. George Clay keeper of the Saracens Head beer house. Newton Street.Upton was charged with being open after time, this being the second offence within 12 months. The policeman went into the beer house between 12 and 1 o'clock where he found 3 women and a man they had hid their drinks under the settle. He was fined £5. (Worcester Herald).

1844. Andrew Powell employed with a cargo boat belonging to Messrs Clay and Newman of Droitwich was fined 20 shillings and costs for using his horse beyond the distance for which the ticket was taken out. (Worcester Herald).

1847. March 4th. Testimonials for Mr Rendall. Corn and bunion practitioner were given by Mr J. C. Clay of Worcester and R. J. Clay of 40 Tything. Worcester. (Worcester Journal).

1849. Sept.12th. At Malvern Henry Clay a tailor was fined 2s-6d with 7 shillings costs for an assault on Frederick Clay his brother. (Worcester Chronicle).

1849. Nov. 21st. Redditch. Oddfellows Dinner was attended by J. Clay Esq. Surgeon at the Golden Cross Inn. (Worcester Chronicle).

1850. June 10th. County Court of Gloucester sued and detained George Clay the younger formely of Upton - on - Severn. Worcester. Coal and Hay Dealer, Retailer of Beer, Cider and Tobacco. Then of Bye Street. Ledbury. Heredfordshire. (Ref.- Gazette Newspaper).

1878. Feb.1st. John Clay of Hallow Green in County of Worcester. Plumber and Glazier has been summoned to appear at a Solicitors office in the matter of liquidation. (London Gazette page 566).
