Clay of Essex

Clay's of Essex are documented from early times there was an ancient manor house in the county called Clay Hall mentioned in the archives of the 1200s.

1203. Clayhall is a district of Ilford (Parish of Barking). The name is derived from an old manor house.It is first mentioned in a document of 1203 as being an area of land granted by Adam and Matilda Claie to Richard de la Claie. It passed through several hands and in a conveyance of 1410 it is described as the Manor of Clay Hall. The manor house was was demolished in the mid 1700s and replaced by a farmhouse.

1203 -04. Easter. Adam de la Claie  and Richard de la Claie 4 virgates of land with apputences in Claie and 6 acres in Halvehide which Gilbert Claie held fot 7 s hillings per year also to Matilda mother of Richard de la Claie 30 acres of land and a meadow called La Petitemore to her for 4shillings per year. 1215 - 1247. Reginald de la Clay at 13 others at the Court of Barking. Witnesses concerning land in Ingatestone. ( Essex Archives Ref.- D/DPT1/1586).

1227. Reynold de la Claye is mentioned at Clay Hall, the property stayed in the family until 1313 when Adam son of Adam de la Cleye conveyed it to Walter Bassinge - 3 messuages and 215 acres which was then held by Denise widow of Adam de la Cleye. Later In the 1600s  Clay Hall  Manor House was described to be of considerable size. (Ref.- History of Clayhall).

1200s. Reginald de Claie is a witness to a grant of land in Welcomestowe. (Ref.- Catalogue of Ancient Deeds).

1221. Peter de la Claye had one and a half hides of land in Essex.- (TNA Ref.- C60/16 folio 236).

1222. Survey of Oldleigh (Hadleigh)  2 acres held by S. de Clay for 8d. (Ref.- Book - English Rural Society 1200 - 1350).

1290. May 22nd. Inquisition. Adam de la Claye. Freeman and others who said the woods are within the bounds of the Forest of Essex re the enquiry as to whether the woods of Giles de Plaie in East Ham and West Ham in Essex are within the bounds of the Royal Forests.  (East Sussex Record Office Ref.- HEH/BA/VOL65/1A).

1297. September. To the Sheriff of Essex. Order to cause a verderer for the Forest of Essex to be elected in place of Adam le Cleye deceased. (TNA Ref.- Clalendar of Close Rolls. Edw. 1).

1312 - 1313. Adam son of Adam de la Cleye concerning 3 messuages, 128 acres of land, 10 acres of meadow, 77 acres Wood in Berkyngge and 2 messuages which Denise late wife of Adam de la Cleye held in Dower. (Ref.- TNA. Feet of Fines).

1337. Thomas atte Cleye age 50 years and more knows it  because after the birth of the said Edward de Wodeham he purchased 20 acres of land in Lambourn by Chigewell. Essex. (Cal. Inquisition).

1419. April 4th.  Deed. Gift with Warranty. John Cley of Little Walden. Essex gives to the nuns  of the Priory of St Mary and St Radegund of Cambridge for the salvation of his soul and those of his ancestors a tenement in Little Weldon. 1592 July 10th. Essex  Assizes. Inquisition at Maldon. Coroners view the body of Nicholas Claye. The jurors say the said Nicholas on the 18th of May about 8 o' Clock in the morning was assaulted by Robert Cullington of Woodham Ferris with a sword with which he did thrust him in the stomach giving him a mortal wound of which he instantly died. Pleads not guilty. Found guilty. (ASS35/34/2/37).

1602. 10th. April. William Parter was arrested for a felony and given to the custody of Francis Claye keeper of the gaol at Colchester Castle but on the 17th April he escaped.  At the assizes Francis Claye --- pleaded not guilty for a negligent escape  but was found guilty and fined. Old Charles Clay still has 3 sons, John at Dilbridge, Samuel who was to go to Shenfield in place of Charles and Edward who would like to have either Greenstead or Shenfield. All are respectable young men. Poor old Clay and his wife are sadly shocked at their loss and Charles' widow Is almost distracted. 1816. Dec. 20th. Letter from Charles H. Ware to Baroness Lucas. He assumes the two Clay's referred to are John Clay of Dilbridge  and Samuel Clay of Greenstead Hall. Edward Clay jnr of Shenfield has had the allowance of 20% and Edward Clay snr about whom the annoymous letter was written has hitherto paid only half the old rent. He concludes that the 15% which he allowed John and Samuel Clay is less than the allowance made last year. John's new rent of £480 took effect from Michaelmas 1813. Samuels rent of £304 was set in 1809. Its reported that John Clay has laid out probably £2,000 in improvements in a period when good crops produced very little money.
