1398. Nov. 26th. Complaint by Giles Esshe that Richard Clay and 18 others (named) assembled at Crediton lay in wait to kill him assaulted him at Knoll shooting arrows at him and his wife and servants there and put his head on a trunk of a tree to cut it off, ravished his daughter Joan, besieged his house at Knoll and would not let him or his wife or servants go out and so threatend them both at Crediton and Knoll. County Devon and so persecuted them from place to place that for a long time he durst not go about without a great number of men constantly with him so that his land lay uncultivated and his business undone and his men and servants unable to attend any market to buy victuals. 1836. Oct.14th. Exmouth.  An Affair of Honour took place between Lieutenant Clay and Lieutenant Davies on the Warren near Dawlish. The parties having taken their ground at the word "Fire" the pistol of Lieutenant Clay not being discharged Lieutenant Davies fired in the air. Lieutenant Clay advanced towards his adversary's second and declared himself perfectly satisfied. The decision was confirmed although Lieutenant Davies did not in any way withdraw or retract expression he had made of Lieutenant Clay. The parties then left the grounds. (Royal Cornwall Gazette).

1837. Exmouth.- The Ball took place at Bastine Globe Hotel. General Clay was in attendance as also was Miss Clay. (Sherborne Mercury).

1838. March 1st. J. S. Clay. Esq. Clerk of the Barstaple Poor Law Union received a letter of reply from the Poor Law Commissioners regarding his request to be able to administer out of his house relief to paupers who from inclemency of the weather and want of employment are in state of destitution. - they replied that the weather had improved and they should be found work. 1846. June 25th. At Barnstaple Mr Clay complained of an offensive nuisance in the vicinity of his offices in Tuly Lane in the shape of various pigsties from which horrible smells were constant so much as sometimes to drive himself and his clerks from the offices as well as to  endanger the health of the neighbourhood. - The Council served the owners to abate the said nuisances within 21 days. 1871. Aug. 18th. Mistress Mary Clay  one of the contempory worthies of Devon, Mrs Clay lives in Ottery Street. Mary is in her 95th year, she has 68  grandchildren as for her great grandchildren she has long since given up numbering them but states that they are near 300. A tea drinking event at which all the family assembled with Mrs Clay at the head of the table. Enter 8 children 68 grandchildren plus 200 great grandchildren. Total 276 thirsty Clay's.
