1843. March 25th. Court Case. Bowtell v Clay. An action was brought by Sarah Bowtell whose maiden name was Clay against her brother Benjamin Clay concerning a farm left to her by her former husband. (Cambridge Chronicle and Journal).

1844. Oct. 5th. Cambridge Police Court. Charles Clay was involved in a fight at the Black Lion Inn.  Silver Street. The police came and Clay knocked PC Morgan down but he managed to get the handcuffs on Clay who repeatedly kicked him about 50 times. Clay was acting on behalf of the landlord in the fight. The Magistrates dismissed the case and PC Morgan was reprimanded. (Cambridge Chronicle and Journal).

1846. July 11th. Cambridge Petty Sessions. Mr Benjamin Clay of Haddenham was charged with having driven a horse and cart furiously  in the parish of Cottenham. The horse was going at so rapid a pace as to endanger lives, he was flogging the horse on. A child who was  the cousin of Clay was in the middle of the road and the horse knocked it down. Richard Clay the brother of Benjamin was there. The Magistrates cautioned Mr Clay and dismissed the case upon payment of expenses. (Cambridge Chronicle and Journal).

1847. May 24th. William Clay age 6 of St Botolph, accidental death when drowned in the River Cam. (Cambridgeshire Archives Ref.- CB/CO/P12/24).

1848. Nov.18th. Waterbeach. Mr Brassingwaite charged William Clay with breaking windows at his public house. He had refused Clay any ale and heard a crash of glass and saw Clay hurry away. He was fined 6 shilling Damage and 13s-6d expense. (Cambridge Ind.Press).

1849. Sept. 29th. Auction of 5 acres of land at Haddenham. Isle of Ely. Cambridgeshire in occupation of Mr Benjamin P. Clay near the land of Frederick Clay. (Cambridge Independent Press).

1849. November.Court at Cambridge. Benjamin Clay of Haddenham was charged with damaging the door of a public house occupied by Mrs Hopkins at Cottenham. Mrs Hopkins said at 4 o'clock in the morning she was disturbed by violent kicking at the door, the staple flew off and Clay came in, he called for a pint of ale but his demand was refused. The Bench fined Clay 10 shillings for damage and 23 shillings expenses. (Cambridge Independent Press).

1854 -1894. Charles Clay manager of Cambridge Universty Press for 40 years. After 10 years he had quadrupled the turnover of the printing house publishing many books including Bibles he retired in 1894 leaving his elder son John Clay in charge of the printing business.
