1317. Dec.1st.. York. Complaint by Richard de Stratton that over 20 men including Philip le Cleye and John le Cley assaulted him and his brother at lee Wee . Southampton. (Ref.- PC2022).

1337. May 6th. Nicholas de Verford. Bailiff in the hundred of Redbridge has caused extension to tenements of a number of tenants including Julianna atte Cleye. (Ref.- Testwood Deeds. IM31/7).

1352. March 25th. William Cley of Sway. Swartelynghide mentioned in a document. (Ref.- Phillips 29M82/142).

1355. John Cley held a shop in  Saddlers Row Winchester. Hampshire for 8 shillings rent.  (Ref.- Survey of Winchester Part 1).

1381. Poll Tax. Willemus Clay of Lymington and his wife taxed 4d and Isabella Cley taxed 4d.- (The National Archives Ref.- E179/173/39).

1493. Jan. 16th.  Concerning land in Sway. Swartelynghide near to the land of John Cley. (Hampshire Archives 29M82/133).

1537. Thomas Clay dwelling at Southampton. Hampshire bequests in Will of Sir Henry Henle. - to Roger and John Clay my brothers all my gowns.

1557. Will and Inventory of Charles Claye of Itchen Stoke. Hampshire. Vicar. - To his  brother Humfrey Cley £3  to his brother William Clay 20 shillings. (Hampshire Record Office Ref.- 1558U/047).

1587. Edward Clay of Kingsgate Street. Shoemaker took a  40 year lease at 5 shillings rent of the tenement, house and garden.  (Ref.- Survey of Medieval Winchester).

1590. John Clay taxed in Alverstoke Lay Subsidy. Portsdown Division.- (TNA Ref.- E179/174/445).

1654. Jan.1st. Sister Margaret Paule in the 22 years of her age made her vows. Confessour  Father Daniel Clay, and Sister Elizabeth Timpely in the 25 years of her age made her vows Father Daniel Clay receiving the profession. (Ref.- Franciscan Nuns and Friars page 142)

1674. Surrender by Henry Pryor for use of Richard Clay and Joan his wife of a close called Wood Close and 3 closes with a messuage in West Meon. Hampshire. (Hampshire Record Office Ref.- 53M63/23).

1705. Jan.12th. Portsmouth. List of names on the ship "Resolution" John Clay.  Steward age 40.  Captain Gallaway.  (Slave ship for the Royal Africa Company).

1729. Sept. Marriage Licence. Richard Clay of Hambledon. Husbandman. Bachelor and Frances Mitchel of the same spinster at St Maurice Winchester. (Allegations for Marriage Licences Hampshire). 

1746. May 31st. Marriage Licence. William Clay of HMS Royal George mariner and Mary Leves of Alverstoke spinster.

1764. Settlement Exam of Jeremiah Clay weaver of Fordingbridge. Hampshire born Freshford. Somerset apprenticed age 10 at Freshford but ran away after 4 years now has wife Sarah and child Phoebe.(Hamps Ref.- 20M83/PO19/5).

1780. Feb.15th. Marriage Licence. William Clay of Gosport and HMS Victory age 21 Bachelor and Mary Barnett age 21 of Gosport spinster  at Gosport.

1780. Settlement Exam of James Butt of West Meon who rented a piece of land from Richard Clay for 1 guinea a year. (Hampshire Record Office Ref.- 53M63/163/2).

1786. Settlement Exam of Sarah Clay widow born Wilton. Wiltshire she married Jeremiah Clay he died 3 years ago. (Hamps Ref.- 20M83/PO19/28).

1791. Will of Betty Clay widow of Lymington. Hampshire. Brother Benjamin Bailey of London, Neice Betty Bailey. (TNA Ref.- PROB11/1211/229).

1793. July 22nd. Winchester. On Tuesday at the Castle of this City was held the General Quarter Sessions of the County. Richard Clay was indicted for a felony at Hinton Ampner in Hampshire. (Hampshire Chronicle).

1794. July 7th. Committed to the County Gaol. Mary Clay for stealing linen from Mr Joseph Hill at Whickham with whom she lived as servant. (Hampshire Chronicle).

1794. Aug. 4th. To be imprisoned at Brideswell. - Mary Clay for stealing sundry articles from Mr Hall's at the Kings Head. Wickham where she lived as chambermaid. Sentenced to 6 months and fined 1 shilling. (Hampshire Chronicle).

1794. Bond for maintenance of the base child of Sarah Clay single woman of West Meon by John Tull jnr father labourer. (Hampshire Record Office Ref.- 53M63/140/19).

1798. Oct. 25th. Marriage Licence. John Clay of the 55th Regiment of Foot quartered at Winchester. Private age 30 Bachelor and Dorothy Silcock of St Thomas, Winchester age 21 Spinster. (Ref.- Allegations for Marriage Licences in Hampshire).

1799. April 29th. Christopher Clay now serving on His Majesty's ship "Trumpet" bequeath all goods,  chattels, estate whatsoever to my wife Sarah Clay now residing at Forton near Gosport. (Admiralty).

1812. May 31st. The partnership between John Clay and Henry Shephard of Portsea. Brushmakers has been dissolved by mutual consent.  All persons having any demand on the late Clay and Shepard contact John Clay of Lion Terrace. (London Gazette page 1446 + 1447).

1853. Charles John Clay born Hampshire age 14 drummer Royal Marines . Portsmouth. Discharged 1854 invalid. (TNA Ref.- ADM153/393/25).

1862. Nov. 22nd. On the 20th married Louisa daughter of Mr John Clay of Richmond Place. Portsea to Mr W. G. Diver of Landport. (Hampshire Advertiser).

1864. Admiralty Records. John Plowright married Charlotte Amelia Clay at Kent Street Chapel. Portsea. Hampshire - recorded for the Royal Navy's Widows Pension. (TNA Ref.- ADM13/71/505).

1869. Oct. 23rd. Robbery at Alverstoke. Two men were charged with stealing 3 fowls the property of George Clay at Fareham. Major Clay lives at Catisfield Lodge near Fareham. The men were caught by the policeman who took the fowls to Major Clay. They were sentenced to prison with hard labour. (Hampshire Telegraph).

1887. Oct.1st. Charles Clay beer retailer and ex policeman was involved with some people in a horse racing dispute resulting in a case of assault by Mr Moore horse watcher on George Kirk. He pushed Mr Kirk in the duckpond and said to Clay hold my watch while I go in the water and he pushed Kirk's head under and said that's a good wash. Mr Clay was in the police force and left it 4 years ago and his character was marked good. The prisoners were committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions. (Hampshire Advertiser).

1887. William Henry Clay born Alverstoke. Gosport. Hampshire joined the Royal Marines at Portsmouth in 1864 age 14  discharged 1887 reason invalided. (TNA Ref.- ADM157/1892/17).

1889. Reginald Stanley Clay born 1868 at Portsea. Southampton son of John Clay of Finsbury Park. London. Accountant admitted to Cambridge University.

1891. Aug. 6th. Southampton Police Court. There were drunken soldiers yelling and singing on the streets of Southampton and Head Constable Clay said the situation was difficult as they were very short handed. (Southern Echo).

1892. Dec.17th. Presentation to Mr Phillip S. Clay late Chief Constable of Southampton and now holding a similar position at Nottingham. The residents of Southampton in appreciation of his good work presented him with an inscribed silver tea and coffee service also thanks were given to Mrs Clay. Mr Clay was also Chairman of the Southampton Philharmonic Society. (Southampton Newspaper Report).

1922. Sept. 8th. Workhouse Inmates Entertained.- For 23 years Mr W. M. Clay of Alverstoke has entertained the inmates of the Alverstoke House of Industry. (Hampshire Telegraph).

1922. 362 British Red Cross War Service Medals were presented to members of the Hampshire branch including Dorothy Pelham Clay. (Newspaper Report).

1936. Sept. 24. Wedding of Interest. Chief Scout's daugter Hon. Betty Baden-Powell was married to Mr Gervas Charles Robert Clay eldest son of Mr and Mrs Gerard Arden Clay of Albury. Surrey Mr Ralph Clay was best man. (Ref.- The Womans World Newspaper).
