1570. Apr. 30th. True Bill that at St Leonard's in Shurediche in the night of the said day Henry Claye and 7 others all late of London broke into the house of William Belcher and stole a mans scarlet woolen cloth gown worth 20s and a pair of linen sheets worth 6s the skirts of a womans gown worth 10s a robe worth 20s a black satan doublet worth 20s a black felt hat imbroidered with gold worth 6s they were found guilty and it was adjudged that each of them should be hung. Job Clay joined the ship Resolution which was Captain James Cook's ship he received punishment whilst on board, 12 lashes  on 16th July 1777 for neglect of duty, 6 lashes on 7th Feb. 1778  for neglect of duty, 12 lashes on 1st June 1779 for insolence. 1789. April 18th. For Sale Freehold Estate. A  pulic house called The Green Man at Poplar with 4 dwelling houses attached with good tenants including Mr Clay. (Ref.- The Times newspaper page 4).

1789. July 8th. Court Case. Stolen Timber. John Clay sworn . I am a timber merchant, on Wednesday 8th July I saw the timber all very safe there were 4 floats it was in Church Walk. Rotherhithe it was late in the evening between 8 and 9. I did  not miss them till I received information the next day in the afternoon I  went down and looked for myself and I saw they had been stolen from the ropes being cut that fastened them, we went to Thomas Street and found it there it was my timber. It was taken by the prisoner Blake. (Ref.- Proceedings of the King's Commission of the Peace).

1789. July 9th. Court Case. Thomas Morgan was indicted for stealing 3 large pieces of timber value £3.10s the property of George Clay and  at court  Charle Blake was indicted for feloniously receiving the same knowing it to be stolen. (Ref.- Proceedings of the King's Commission of the Peace).

1791. Aug.15th. William son of George Clay London Merchant and ship owner. - William became a Liberal Party politician in 1841 he was made a Baronet and became Sir William Clay. He married Harriet -- Dickason in 1822 and lived at Fulwood Lodge in Middlesex and had several children. His son Sir William Clay also became a Baronet and married Mariana Schuster in 1855. 1816. May 31st. Middlesex Court.- Dunne v Clay. An action brought against Knightly Musgrave Clay for compensation of a £1000 for the seduction of Dunne's wife. She had eloped with Clay who had  -------  been a family friend. He was an officer in the 9th Regiment. The Jury returned a verdict of damages of £400. (Stamford Mercury).

1819. Will of Richard Clay of Gloucester Place. Portman Square. Middlesex. Bequests to Mary Owen who resides with him and 4 children he had with her, Edmund Clay, Richard Clay, Mary Clay and Elizabeth Clay.  (TNA Ref.- PROB11/1616).

Richard Clay. Silhouette. - Mr Tony Robinson has recently corresponded with me and although he is not descended from the Clay's he has kindly given me permission to display this rare item which is in his possession. He writes. - "For the last 65 years I have owned a silhouette of Richard Clay of the Bombay Cavalry, on the rear of the silhouette is a note from Mrs Deans (dated 17th April 1873)  it reads Richard Clay of the Bombay Cavalry died at Deese 21st October 1822 aged about 20 he was the brother of Admiral Deans 1st wife".

Camp Deesa was the British Military Quarters in Bombay. India.  The Oriental Magazine and Calcutta Review Vol.1 gives regimental deaths. - Died in Camp Deesa in October 1822 Cornet Richard Clay of the 2nd Regiment of Light Cavalry.

Admiral Robert Deans of Huntingdon and his wife Eliza had a son who became Captain Robert Deans in the Royal Navy who  in 1821 married  Mary Clay the sister of the afore mentioned Richard Clay, Admiral Deans died in 1815 so it was his son Robert  Deans who married Mary Clay in 1821.  Richard  on the silhouette  and his sister Mary were the children of Richard Clay of Gloucester Place, Portman Square. Middlesex. I have not been able to find out if Richard died in Camp Deesa of wounds or some disease but we have to thank Mr Robinson for the preservation of this rare Clay artefact.

1822. April 27th. Notice is hereby given that the partnership carried on by Robert Crosby, Samuel Clay and Henry Clay of Saint John Street. Middlesex. Oil Merchants under the name Crosby and Clay was dissolved. The business is now carried on by Samuel Clay. Thomas Clay and Henry Clay. (London Gazette page 698).

1855. July 28th. Francis Barr age 17 a carpenter was indicted at Middlesex Sessions for having stolen the sum of 10 shillings the money of Frances Clay daughter of Sir William Clay MP who resides with her father at Fulwell Lodge. Twickenham. With the assistance of her sister Miss Clay managed the school in the neighbourhood which was attended by 20 children who paid a penny a week to form a little fund.The box in which the money was kept was in Miss Clay's room and the prisoner was employed at the school to do some work but had no permission to enter her room. The box was discovered to be empty and the money was found to be in the prisoners possession. He was sentenced to 8 months with hard labour. (Leicester Chronicle).
