Clay of Dorset

1198 - 1202. Fines made at Sherborne in Dorset  in May and June. Stephen de Clay was on the bench. (Book. - Pleas before the King or his Justices).

1311. May. 12th. Inquisition. The rights of John Goce alias Gooze in Gyllingham. Dorset on lands in Gyllingham his heir is his daughter Elizabeth age 22 and more, wife of John Cley. (Ref.- Calendar of -- Inquisitions Post Mortem Edw. 11).

1312. Order to deliver lands in Gyllingham formely held by John Goce deceased  to John Cley and Elizabeth his wife and his other two  daughters with husbands to hold in tenancy until the next parliament. (Ref.- Calendar of Fine Rolls 1312 page 132).

1313. Partition of lands of John Goce tenant of the King. John Cley and Elizabeth his wife are assigned  a third part of the chief messuage to wit - all the kitchen with annexed chambers with chambers from the hall door extending to the kitchen on the west with the plot round it as bounded by a ditch, a third part of the cow house with the little plot adjoining on the east, a third of the garden near the park with the little fishery of the yearly value of 16d . There are assigned to them 41 acres of arable land of the yearly value of 13s.8d lying in the following adjoining Bengernyfesgrove  at Burnehey near le Frary in Wodeyetfeld in  Brodeforlong in Middellorlang in Wolfeld between the land of John Harlewyn and the hedge of John Goce in la Fodland in Wynelynglaneforlong between the land of Richard Crencho and John Cressbyn at Horshale and at Thorngrave etc, There is also assigned to them an acre of meadow in Suthmede and a third of a meadow in Westham of Bengernyfesgrove. There is also assigned to them a third of the rents of 4 tenants of the yearly value of 3s.4d.  (TNA Ref.- Calendar of Close Rolls. Edw. 11. membrane 7d).

1319-20. John Cley and Elizabeth his wife granted William Haym a messuage and land in Gillingham near Blackmore Vale in Dorset. (The National Archives Ref.- C143/140/7).

1321. March 6th.  Licence  for John Cley and Elizabeth his wife to grant a third part of a messuage in Gyllingham to William Haym by fine of 40 shillings. (Cal of Patent Rolls 14 Edw.11 part 2 page 583).

1417. Richard Cley elected Abbott  of Milton. (Ref.- History of the County of Dorset Vol. 2.).

1418. Feb. 28th. Restitution of the temporalities of the Abbey of Middleton to Richard Cleye monk of the house whose election as abbot is confirmed by the Bishop of Salisbury. (Cal. Pat. Roll. 1416 - 22).

1425. The Abbey of Milton. After a Visitation  severe comments of the management of the then Abbott Richard Cley and he was ordered under penalty of suspension to redeem the jewels and silver vessels which he had sold. (Ref.- History of the County of Dorset).

1431. Resignation of Richard Cley. Abbott of Milton. (Ref.- History of the County of Dorset).

1557. Deed. John Cley and his wife Elizabeth received all the kitchen with annexed chambers with the chambers  from the hall door extending to the kitchen on the west with the plot round it bounded by -  a ditch.  (Ref.- The Ancestor page 254).

1629. Sept.15th. John son of John Clay baptised at Chalbury. Dorset.

1706. June 28th. Rachel daughter of William Clay baptised at Kingstone. Dorset.

1721. Robert son of Samuel and Susan baptised at Sturminster - Newton. Dorset.

1798. March 2nd. Robert son of John and Margaret Clay baptised at Burton Bradstock. Dorset.

1798. March 3rd. Sarah Clay buried at Wareham.

1800. Jan.24th. Jane daughter of John and Margaret Clay batised at Burton Bradstock. Dorset.

1805. John Clay of Burton Bradstock. Dorset took on apprentice John Loveless for a term of 3 years to learn the trade of Flax Dresser. (Dorset History Centre Ref.- PE/BBK:OV3/1).

1830. Messuage, farm, mill and 3 cottages called Childhay in Broadwindsor. Dorset leased to Hayden Clay and land covered with water. (Warwickshire Archives Ref.- CRO299/128).

1859. Feb. 23rd. Settlement Papers of John Loveless who applies for permanent settlement in Burton Bradstock. Dorset. He had been bound apprentice in 1805 to John Clay. Flaxdresser. (Dorset Family  --- History Centre Ref.- PE/BBK: OV3/1).

1877. January. Mr Samuel John Clay was the manager of the Stalbridge Bank during the case of the  forgery of a cheque by John and Alice Gardener. (Ref.- Evening Standard Newspaper).

1903. William Montague Pelham Clay. Heatherland Villa. Uper Parkstone in the county of Dorset and formely residing  at 100 Grove Lane. Denmark Hill. London. SE. (Ref.- PC20230.

1903. Parkestone. Examination of debtor William Montague Pelham Clay described as of no occupation has gross liabilities of £345. The debtor said he was married in 1879 but lived with his mother till the year 1900. He might have settled up his affairs but for being hustled by a doctors bill. (Newspaper Report).

1912. Feb. 17th. Major General Alexander Davidson Clay retired late Madras Corps died on the 2nd at Thornford, Sherborne, Dorset age 81. He was the son of the late Mr Charles Henry Clay of Birdhurst. (Ref.-      -- The Amy and Navy Gazette). - See 1911 Census.
