1222. July 14th. Elias of Changeton pays half a mark for a case against Peter de la Claye concerning one and a half hides of land. (TNA Ref.- C60/16).

1225. I Ralph de la Cleia with the assent of Robert my son and heir have granted for my salvation to the Canons of Chichester all my lands within the city and all my land of Hauedstok in the suburbs and north of the city. Sealed with my seal and that of the city. Confirmation by his sons Robert and Elyas.  (The Chartulary of the High Church of Chichester vol. 46 page 96 folio 366).

The Charter of Elias de la Cley - I Elias Cley son of Ralph de la Cley have granted to William Godynewode land in Manewde, Gredlewyg and Woghoc  which William Gredlewyeg and Richard de -- la Woghoc once held of Ralph de la Cley my father rendering 10 shillings at Michaelmas. 1341.  In the taxation of 1291 the church of Sullington was taxed £10. On the oath of John  atte Claye and 3 others say that 50 years later 1341 the church is taxed on £10. (History of Sussex).

1622. Receiver General of the estate of Richard Earl of Dorset reimbursed Robert Wood for sums paid for the keep of Thomas Clay and 2 men helping him in a survey of the manor of Uckfield. (PC2023).

1918. Lieutenant Colonel Bertie Gordon Clay DSO led his battallion in an attack without artillery which was won by his personal gallantry. (Newspaper Report).

1926. The Will of Major General Sir Charles Holland Smith left an estate of £5,000 to Mrs Millicent Jane Clay was contested by his son who was cut of for squandering money. (Newspaper Report).

1937. April 29th. Died Bertie Gordon Clay of 59 Walsingham Rd. Hove. Sussex. Probate granted to Millicent Jane Clay widow. (Ref.- PC2023).

1937. The death occurred at Hove of Brigadier - General Bertie Gordon Clay late of the 7th Dragoon Guards at the age of 73. He served in the South African and Great War being awarded the DSO and Bar and from 1923 to 1927 was officer commanding the Cavalry Depot at Canterbury. (Newspaper Report).
