1281. May 6th. Alnwick. Inquisition. Thomas del Clay and 11 others say that the prior and convent of Durham and the brothers of Farne Island were seised of 5 quarters of wheat. (Hist. Northumberland).

1284. Mathew de Witterfield was witness with John de Clay prior of Hexham concerning injuries and insults between John de Swynburne and William de Swynburne. (A History of Northumberland).

1289. Johannem del Claye at an Inquisition at Alnwick with 12 others. Latin  transcribes - The King held in his head etc, the villagers by the service of military fees and rents by anus 26s.8d   -- (Ref.- Memoirs etc and Antiquities of Northumberland vol. 2).

c1292. When Archbishop Romayne visited Hexham in the time of Merdenes successor William de Clay he compained that the discipline was loosely observed. (Ref.- A History of Northumberland).

1293. John de Middleton was under 14 years of age when Henry del Clay and Joan his wife made claim to the custody of his lands in Belsay, Little Whittington etc. (History Nortumberland page 328).

1296. List of those who paid subsidy at Howick. Northumberland includes Johannis del Clay and 13 others. Clay was assesed  at £1. 14s. 8d. (Ref.- A History of Northumberland page 341).

1296. A  deed was attested by John Harang and others including John de Clay who was living at Howick concerning inheritance of land in Howick. (Ref.- A History of Northumberland page 342).

1304 - 05. March 5th. Sir Robert Hastings received at Berwick on Tweed from John de Cley vallet of Sir Richard de Bremesgrave 20 quarters of salt. (Cal. Docs relating to Scotland vol. 2 page 444).

1313. July 11th. The mayor of the town of Berwick upon Tweed  to make enquiry concerning John de Cley and 3 others with regards to victuals for the garrison of the town. (Cal.Pat.Rolls. Edw. 11.).

1358. June 16th. Ellis del Clay merchant of Newcastle upon Tyne and 5 other merchants make complaint that a ship with their goods on its way to Newcastle was driven ashore and broken by a storm at Scarborough and that certain men carried away the said goods and merchandise. 1567. Roger Clay held a messuage called "The Spittle" with divers parcels of arable, meadow and pasture land lying in the Flatt and in the fields of Nether Buston and Birling for the term of his life and the life of his 2 brothers under a deed granted to their father at a rent of 15s.1d to be paid to the Monastry of Hulne. 1608.  Northumberland Merchants. List included the families of Clay and 18 other families (surnames only) described as dignified men attending their own business however they were fond of their dinners, wine and music of the pypers and fidlers and in 1608 they paid to the pyper 4 pennies. 1685. May. 22nd. Custom Officials at Newcastle demanded from John Ward master of a ship bound for Holland had he any passengers aboard  his vessel he replied none, a search found a man concealed in a cabin suspected of being a dangerous person. He said  that James Clay waterman brought him  aboard and told him he was an inhabitant of Newcastle. (It was Sir William Scott wanted for treason) ------(Ref.- Depositions of the Castle of York).

1685. Sept. 27th. Mary daughter of John Clay baptised at St Michael's Church in Alnwick. Northumberland. (Parish Register entry).

1732. Nov. 25th. Mary daughter of  George Clay baptised at Berwick upon Tweed. Northumberland. (Parish Register entry).

1736. Court Case Reed v Johnson. Plaintiff Elizabeth Mitford only daughter and heir of Robert Clay deceased of East Thriston. Northumberland and Mary his wife deceased. (TNA  Ref.- C11/795/25).

1760. March 15th. This is to give notice that William Clay born Sunderland by the Sea  in the County of Durham aged about 26 years 5 feet 4 inches high by trade a staymaker a little pitted with the smallpox a little white looking  was inrolled in Captain John Hall's Company of Militia for the County of Northumberland in the month of September 1757 and was working  of his trade at Durham in August 1759 and has not  since been heard of. If the said William be alive and will repair to Captain John Hall at Berwick upon Tweed within one month he shall be kindly received. (Newcastle Weekly).

1760. March 20th. A reward is offered for intelligence concerning William Clay. (Ref.- The Public Ledger page 4).

1774. Jan. 15th. Farm to be let at Cocklaw near Berwick. John Clay at Cocklaw will show the premises. (Ref.- The Newcastle Chronicle Jan. 15th. page 1).

1786. Sept. 5th. Ensign Sprague and Captin Clay 2 officers  of the 40th Regiment were tried on seperate indictments for the murder of one Armstrong in the streets of Carlisle. Sprague was acqitted having proved his alibi. Clay was tried, he pleaded not guilty to murder but said that the weapon he held in his hand was the cause of Armstrong's death. Having been assaulted by Armstrong and some others with him drew his hanger and told them he was upon his defence. He says that when Armstrong was aiming a blow at him he found him press upon the weapon. The judge said it was probable he certainly could have no intention to kill or wound the deceased except in his own defence, The judge was convinced of his innocence and ordered him to pay £25 to His Majesty. 1802. July 9th. Borough of Berwick upon Tweed. Deed of Feoffment relating to premises belonging to James Turnbull now in occupation of John Clay on the boundry of  Eastern Lane. (Berwick upon Tweed Record Office Ref.- BA/G/2/10/46/627).

1819. Oct. 5th. A Return submitted to the parish constable of Berwick upon Tweed  of residents in the house of Mr John Clay. - James Clay apprentice. Two  Children above 14. One child under 14. No servants or lodgers. Signed John Clay. (Berwick upon Tweed Record Office. Ref.- BA/G/2/16/26/206).

1821. June 28th. Memorial to Berwick Guild of Freemen from the inhabitants of Berwick upon Tweed  includes John Clay, Patrick Clay and 23 others. (Berwick on Tweed Record Office. BA/G/2/4/6/66).

1822. Nov. 16th. Died at North Shields in Union Street on Saturday greatly respected Mr Henry Clay son of Mrs Clay confectioner. (Durham County Advertiser).

c1832. Legal Brief for the Corporation in a matter of arbitration with Mr Patrick Clay relating to his claim for New Mills on the Whiteadder Water. (Berwick upon Tweed Record Office. BA/P/5/52/8).

1834.  July 11th. Jumping Ranters.- At the Court House R. Clay and John Price two lads were charged with assaulting 2 others in the Jumping Ranters Chapel at the Bank. The assault was seen by several witnesses and Clay and Price were fined 8 shillings and costs. The Judge expressed his wonder at jumping being used in religious services and one of the preachers said that it was the outpouring of Gods Spirit. (Leeds Mercury and also Chester Chronicle).

1842. March 21st. John Clay and Frederick Rosenborg were granted by Queen Victoria to lawfully make use of their invention of improvements in arranging and setting up Types for Printing in England  ---- and Wales and the town of Berwick upon Tweed. (Ref.- Her Majesty's Royal Letters Patent).

1846. Oct. 12th. Conviction of Dennis Herriott at Berwick Sessions for assault on George Porter held before John Clay. Justice of Peace. Fined 10 shillings. (Berwick Record Office. - BA/J/QS/A/7/27/68).

1904. July 16th. John Robert Clay age 24 married Isabella Henderson age 21 at St Peter's Church. Lynmouth. Northumberland. Fathers names Thomas Clay and Septimus Henderson.

1905. August 4th. The Shields Daily News. Alexander Clay was arrested for stealing a brace value £1 from Thomas Miller Young. Cartwritght of Upper Toll Street. His mother Margaret Clay pawned it for 2s-3d. He said I took it because he owed me money. The Magistrates  fined him 10 shillings including costs. (Ref.- Tyne and Wear Archives. - TWA DX1388/1).

Alexander Clay Born c1887.

1907. Bertram Clay age 29 took part in a walking race between Newcastle upon Tyne and Haltwhistle a distance of just over 40 miles, there were many contestants he came second finishing only 10 yards behind the winner. Bertram was born at Newcastle in 1874 the son of William and Mary Clay wealthy shipping merchants. Bertram married Mary Emily Lee in 1908 but had no children.

1915. Newspaper Report.  A Lusitania Victim. Miss Elizabeth Clay of 14 Windsor Terrace. Newcastle who was lost at sea in the sinking of the Lusitania left estate valued at £2,261. 7s. 10d. (Ref.- The Newcastle daily Journal 1915). - - She was the daughter of William and Mary Robina Clay her body was recovered and she was buried at Jesmond Old Cemetery. Her father was Ships Broker and Export Coal Merchant.

Sergeant James Clay, RAF 617 Squadron, Dambusters.

1943. May.16th - 17th. Sergeant James Henry Clay born 1911 North Shields son of  Robert and Mary Clay took part in the Dambusters Raid with RAF 617 Squadron but his Lancaster Bomber was badly damaged by flak during the flight over Holland and had to return to base.
