1199. Stephen de Claie appeared against Robert  de Muschaump in a Plea of Mortgage of land in Northampton but Robert did not appear. Harrowden, Broughton, Edgcott. (Knights Fee page 325).

1200. April 25th.  Stephen de Clay was granted the manor of Finedon in Northamptonshire by King John at a rent of £26 per annum, he was still holding it in 1209,  Stephen was a Justice of the King and was at courts of law as a juddge in Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Cornwall.  (Ref.- PC2023)

1527. Court Session held at Northampton Castle. Richard Cley of Wellingborough  with others gave oath that the 3 men on the 16th  August 1527 were armed with staff and pychforks and other weapons assembled at Tansor in a meadow and assaulted and wounded Guido Lynne.  (TNA Ref.- KB9/506 m 41).

1679. May 7th. Popish Plot. The information of Mathew Clay of  Desborrowe in County Northampton. This informant saith he lodged in Mr Blaesdon's an apothecary in Arundell Street and hath known him for about 2 years  and saith he never knew Mr Jolly but saith his brother Danyell Clay might know the said Jolly which brother went beyond the sea about 4 months ago since and is at Paris as this informant beleives. Small marble monument  over the west gallery in Daventry church with the Clay coat of arms and inscription - Sacred to the memory of Samuel Clay esq who died March 6th MDCCC (1800)  aged 56 years also of Mary Clay relict (wife) of the above who died Nov. 8th. 1826. June 24th.  A melancholy circumstance occurred at Ringstead near Thrapston. The Rev. Benjamin Clay and his sister were walking along the banks of the river when their dog went into the water and got tangled among some weeds. Mr Clay fearing the dog would be drowned went into the water but got out of his depth and sank to the bottom, he was a non swimmer. Several men tried to save him but his life was lost. The dog swam ashore without any assistance. (Durham County Advertiser).

1848. March 11th.  Poaching at Harleston. - Charles Clay age 25 and 2 others charged with going armed at night upon lands in Harleston for the purpose of destroying game. There was a fight with the game keeper who can swear to Clay being one as he could see his great red whiskers and even had hold of them as they wrestled on the ground. At a later time he saw Clay at Brixworth where he and another man were thatching in the town. Mentioned in the case are his brother Joseph Clay and wife Ann - Charles Clay was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. (Northampton Mercury Newspaper).

1849. Oct. 13th. Buried at Nuneaton aged 90 Ann widow of the late Mr Charles Clayt of that place. (Newspaper Report).

1850. The very promising talent of a young lady in St Martin's, Stamford. Northants who has just had published a beautiful song the music of which she herself has composed and is entitled "The Melancholy Days are come". The young composer is Miss Sarah Clay (Born 1834)  daughter of the late Mr Arthur Clay esq of this place. (Newspaper Report).
