In the article, ¨Sharing One Skin,¨ by Jeanette Armstrong it refers to identity being a big part of a person. Without knowing who you are, and knowing yourself through experiences in your past self , you may disarrange who you are as a person. Made up of four selves which first starts with the physical referring to the text as to, ¨ the continuous interaction between our bodies and everything around us¨. With the following of the emotional self which is a capacity to form bonds with aspects of your own surroundings involving your personal spirit. However the thinking-intellectual self is the spark that can burn your day down or be the greatest implement to influence our decisions. The last is the spiritual self that is the one that holds all the other selves together, and which is the one that fights the battles we don't see on the surface. This all ties to our communities ,and our family systems that influence our beliefs. Which Armstrong touches on in her article.
-Armstrong, Jeanette. 1996 “Sharing One Skin: The Okanagan Community.” Pp. 460-470 in Jerry Mander and Edward Goldsmith (eds), The Case Against the Global Economy, San Francisco, CA: Sierra Club Books.
This article ties to my SHP topic by forming the connection between your spiritual, physical, thinking-intellectual, and the emotional self. In running there is a sense of that connection with the ground below you and the air that you inhale. You have to be in touch with your soul, spirit, physical self, and mind. Without one of these you can cause yourself to drift when you run and can lead yourself to failure. Your mind and body are connected which will function with fuel. That fuel is my thinking-intellectual self because I know that if my mind breaks then my body will start to give up, and your mind is the greatest weapon that you possess in running. Itś not how fast you can go, but how long you can hold your stride for. Sometimes I see people break that don't show a single sweat drop on them. I understand that it is uncomfortable, but that's one of the challenges you have to overcome when facing those challenges. That's where the emotional self kicks in, so you have to control yourself , and your breathing just to get through that challenge.
In this short article the author talks about the drastic change of culture through boarding schools. One child said, "We had to leave our Indian at home." This expresses the way Natives were stripped of their identity, and they were not able to show themselves or practice their culture at boarding schools. Many of the students had to carry two identities, and they were often times confused about who they are. When your identity is suppressed by your environment it takes a toll on yourself, and your four selves.

Memories and stories are connected to our land as described by, B. Toastie in the article, ¨ How Place Names Impact the Way We See Landscape ¨ There are many different ways we see the landscapes that are tied with names. Take Mount Rushmore for example, as it is an example of government people over the Native American people. We get an understanding of the impotence, and personality of a place if we hear the name of one such, an insight can be interpreted from the history a place holds on the landscape. Through memories we can connect names for we hold close to us, as it makes us a people to remember our identity.

Indian Running Native American History and Tradition
Nabokov, Peter. ¨Indian Running Native American History and Tradition ¨.Ancient City Press, 1987
This novel, by Peter Nabokov titled ¨Indian Running Native American History and Tradition¨ is about the history of running in Native American societies. It is summarized in the first pages of the book, as the purpose of running to Native Americans, as it was used according to pg 11, ¨Before the coming of the white man Indians ran to communicate, hunt, and fight.¨ Many also ran to reenact their beliefs and myths that are creation stories. In the most important times of the Pueblo Revolt runners were sent from village to village. Pueblos, like suni, Ohkay Owingeh, Taos, Santo Domingo, Yuman, Picuris, Tesuque, Hopi, Jemez, and many more all contributed runners. These runners would take deerskinds with plans, knotted strings, for which the Incas called ¨quipus¨, and the Apache would take an izze-kloth. These runners were held high in their cultural societies, and viewed as bearing powers of the animals. Without runners in our pueblos and tribes communication and that integration with other pueblos would have been impossible.

Northern Arizona University. ¨Running in Hopi History and Culture¨. 2004
This article , titled ¨ Running in Hopi and Culture¨, by Northern Arizona University, is focused on the runners of Hopi. The Hopi people were known for their speed and fleetness. Running to their tribe was a sacred act, so it was kept secret when the Spanish came. Warfare against the Navajo brought Hopi to use their runners against them in war. Runners would steal hair, spit, clothes, and items from Navajo camps. They then would take it to be witched on so the enemy loses strength and gains fear. In 1912 Lewis Tewanima from Songoopavi won the silver Olympic games. Another Hopi runner, Nicholas Quamawahu won the Long Beach- New York Marathon in 1927.

In this short article written by Sam Heward, ¨The Tarahumara Runners of The Copper Canyons¨, although it is not talking about New Mexico tribes, it shares the runners of Mexico, and the differences between the two ways of life. These people are also victims of the Spanish in the 16th century. Spanish conquerors often killed or enslaved these native peoples. Many of the shelters they lived in were cliffs overhangs, caves, and later on started moving to workable land so they could live off the land. These settlements caused them to run long distances for food, and inter-village communication.

JohnBigham."Dedication To The eRun You Love". Runners World. 29 September 2004
The short article titled " Dedication To The Run You Love" summarizes the hardships and dedication it takes to be committed to running. It shares the opinion that running is a life choice if you take it seriously enough. It's a whole lot easier to quit than stay and fight. Impatience is a main factor with the belief that results don't come right away. This statement is true with time and dedication like a famous runner once said, "...they''d chizzle their way through stone". With one's ego dropped you can find peace, "Dedication means not giving up and not giving in."
