I am interested in my topic because I am very curious on the dangers of technology. I have grown up using technology since childhood, but this has led me to almost depend on it. I have failed to see the real dangers and actual effects of prolonged use. I am interested to see if it really is as dangerous to youth as most adults claim. I wonder if we will be able to find a healthy balance with tech usage.

The first source we looked at was "Sharing One Skin The Okanagan Community'' by Jeanette Armstrong. It went into detail on how the Okanagan people view identity. Describing identity as four components: physical self, emotional self, thinking-intellectual self and spiritual self. These four selves fuse to form a heartful individual that can form bonds with others to form a true community.
Community isn't Just the people it is just as well as the place a community is formed around. The second source "How place names impart the way we see landscape" by B. Toastie explains. the significance of place identity. The memories, stories, and as simple as the name that gives a place a community.
We see communities you can be forced in like the third source "Memories of a Pueblo Childhood" by Joe Suina. The story shows a proud native boy taken from his community and brought into boarding school. The boarding school tries to rid him of his identity. He longs for his old community.
Through the research I found a meaning to identity. How our communities affect our identity, but also how we decide our own identity, we decide.

"Social Media Can Be Used to Spread Hatred” by Jelena Maksimore, explained a current issue in Serbia and how they are using social media as a way to promote xenophobic as well as homophobic ideas. Additionally, they are planting these views early on in the youth on social media. It talks about facebook groups made for these people to communicate and even allows the use of hate speech.

"Classroom Tech integration is Overrated and Harmful" by Anthony Kinnet argues that technology has been wrongfully praised and that it hasn’t greatly impacted education besides using funds for unnecessary flashy tech in classrooms. He states that it promotes expensive programs that don't actually help students excel half the time, showed no difference compared to writing on a white board compared to a subscription to a math service and it may even be hindering students by possibly giving them ADHD.

"Social Media And Self-Image" was a short informative video on the role social media plays in self image. Teenagers online are often targeted with ads showing off models. They also often follow influencers who, to teenagers, live perfect lives. They can soon develop insecurities and a negative self image. This article summarized easily with this quote “Every time I check my feed, I feel so blah about myself.” - AMAZE Org

“Impact of online Grooming" goes in depth about the dark side of technology. Predators who exploit social media to groom children online. It shows the importance of educating children of online safety. Slight enforcement of rules like age verifying on apps help, but this doesn’t stop some people from just lying about their age. INHOPE directly references this “Due to the rapid development of new social media platforms, regulation of children's online safety is becoming more difficult.” -INHOPE

“The Future of Social Media Is a Lot Less Social”, goes into detail about advertisements in social media. Leading to a less social network to connect people to people, which was the main goal of social media. Instead it connects users to brands and ads by using algorithms to share products they may like. This means that people are finding themselves following more influencers and brands than people they share interest with. This is significant because these influencers and brands might begin to make people envious. It also drives them away from meeting people they would actually talk to in real life.

Interconnectedness:
Social Media is able to breakdown geographical barriers, increasing global connections. Now people are free to internet across the globe, with a few exceptions. With it people can develop relationships or even communities with shared goals. This leads to new friends, job opportunities and a way to spread activism quickly.
Social media leads teens to a negative slope of depression, little sleep, higher suicide rates and low attention spans. This leads people to be dissatisfied with life and turn to more social media. A giant domino effect that leads to more screen time and increased loneliness.
A Ted Talk video on mindfulness I watched discussed the way people talk negatively about social media. She offers a fresh opinion that we’re just using it wrong. She believes with mindfulness people can safely use technology to their advantage.
