Personal Connection
I'm interested in my topic because there is so much going on around the world with guns for example mass shootings, school shootings, gang related activities, and even just day to day lives being taken. There needs to be change in the gun laws in every state to at least stop or slow down these killings, and mass shootings. This is also interesting because a lot of innocent lives are being taken and most of these killings are teens and innocent bystanders.
In the article “ And Then I Went To School” talks about his experience when he went to a boarding school. He talks about how all the kids were so confused for getting punished for speaking their language when that's all they were taught to do growing up in the pueblo. All the kids were told in school was “ Leave Your Indian At Home” this caused the kids to start pushing away their tradition, and they started getting used to the way the white people wanted them to live. Lastly when he went back home he found out that they can never change who you are and they can't take your tradition from you.
In the article “Sharing One Skin” Armstrong talks about many different things such as us being, and thinking the same. Armstrong also talks about how the Okanagan all “ Share One Skin” and are automatically a part of the rest of the community once you are born. Armstrong states “The Four Capacities Of Self” these are what the Okanagan call the main capacities that work together. They represent you as a person and it includes Physical, emotional, the thinking intellectual, and spiritual self. These are what every person has and how we connect and Share One Skin.
In the article "AIM Occupation Of Wounded Knee Begins" in this article they stated that the occupation of wounded knee was a very important group that was founded in 1968 by Russell Means, Dennis Banks, and other Native Leaders. In the beginning the AIM occupied the wounded knee the site of infamous 1890 massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. seventh cavalry. In the early 1973 the AIM members had tarded gun fire with federal marshals surrounding it to take it over. Overall the wounded knee occupation only lasted 71 days and 2 Sioux men were shot to death during the occupation. During all of this there were treaties being broken but congress took no steps to honor broken treaties. In conclusion in 1978 AIM was disbanded but some groups continued to function after this.
In this artical "The Fur Trade" Native Americans started to trade diffrent types of furs in the 1600. The Natives consists of the Dakota, and the Ojibwe were the main groups that traded with the European Americans. During this time they started trading there fur for the Europeans things such as pots, pans, and even guns. The reason the fur trade was so popular they made a thing they called a "Trading Post" and "The Travels In French" also known as voyagers got hired to work for the fur trade. But by the 1840 the fur trade had declined dramatically in the Minnesota region due to the fashion changes. In conclusion the fur trade was good for both the French, and Native Americans.
In the article "The Battle For Something Anything On Gun Violence" it talked about the recent shooting that happened in Lewiston, Maine this incident took place on a wednesday night. This led to a manhunt for the suspect were they later found him dead from a self inflicted wound. The on friday president Joe, Biden stated "once again" another shooting he then toured the site of the incident. Jared Golden a democrat representing Maine called for a total ban on assault weapons after the attack. After the shooting they stated that the U.S policymakers could make changes for example they could start banning assault style weapons, enacting universal background checks to stop mass shootings or even slow them down. They also stated that Maine has a yellow flag law which means police have the right to remove a person's guns if a medical professor deems them at risk of serious physical harm.
In this article "More Than 35,000 People Killed In Gun Violence So Far In 2023" it talks about how many deaths have been caused by gun violence, and it also talks about many mass shootings we have had just this year in 2023. As of october 26th 2023 35,275 have died from gun violence this year so that is an average of 118 deaths per day. Out of all these deaths 1,157 were teenagers, and 246 were children, all of these deaths were also police involved shootings 1,173 were killed this year alone. Mass shootings have played a big role in this huge issue with 421 mass shootings majority of these shootings are in Texas, California, Florida, and Illinois. Since gun violence is such a huge issue Joe, Biden signed into new law a gun safety package this was the first gun reform bill from the congress in years.
In the article "Homicides In Brazil At The Lowest Level In Over A Decade" the author Diane Jeantet talks about how many deaths there is and she stated that there was about 47,500 killed in Brazil due to gun violence. They also talked about with all the killings they thought there was no chance of it changing but in 2022 the killings were down 2.4% from previous years. With the killings decreasing they wanted to compare it to the last time they were at low killings, and the last time the killings were low was back in 2011 with 47,215. In conclusion gangs played a big role in the killings, the gangs played a big role with them getting illegal guns in and out of the state. The gangs had seen more killings involving teens and young adults and this was shocking to the reporters because they thought since the killing where slowing down that they wouldn't see as much killings but it was still affecting the teens and the young adults.
In the article "Gun Deaths In Europe" the author Russell Webster talked about how many deaths involving guns have happened in Europe, he did not state any numbers but he compared the UK, and the US rate of deaths which was 4.12 per 100,000 in the US, that is 40 times higher than the UK. In this article it also talked about how in the 1990s the lethal gun violence peaked but then after that date it then started to see a downfall which was a good thing. With the gun violence starting to see a decline in the UK the project target wasn't any different from the US which is young adults, and young teens In conclusion this story was just really interesting because they talked about how they have less gun involved killings then US, and a quote from the author states " One thing the UK can be proud of is the very low level of gun deaths"
