Active employees in the PERS or TPAF (NJ Division of Pensions and Benefits) may be eligible for group life insurance.
Eligible active employees enrolled in either the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) or the Teachers’ Pension and Annuity Fund (TPAF), as administered by the New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits, may qualify for group life insurance coverage.
The District provides Non-Contributory Group Life Insurance at no cost to eligible employees. Coverage is equal to 1.5 times the employee’s base annual salary and is fully funded by the State of New Jersey.
In addition to the non-contributory coverage, eligible employees may elect to participate in the Contributory Group Life Insurance program. Participation is voluntary and requires the employee to contribute a percentage of their base salary as follows:
PERS members: 0.5% (0.005) of base salary
TPAF members: 0.4% (0.004) of base salary
Employees enrolled in both the Contributory and Non-Contributory Group Life Insurance plans are eligible for a total benefit equal to three (3) times their base annual salary.
In the event of the death of an active employee, provided the death does not occur in the performance of regular or assigned duties, the designated beneficiary(ies) will receive the applicable group life insurance benefit. In addition, the beneficiary(ies) will be entitled to the return of the employee’s accumulated pension contributions, including interest, if applicable.
Employees are strongly encouraged to keep their beneficiary designations current and to review them periodically. Questions regarding beneficiary updates or plan provisions may be directed to the New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits or the Human Resources Department.
Premiums for Members Age 70 and Older: The employer pays the contributory group life insurance premium for covered TPAF members who are age 70 and older.
Life Insurance Benefit Amounts: The amount of life insurance benefits paid to beneficiaries at your death depends on three factors: membership status at the time of death, salary, and age.
