As the saying goes "April Showers bring May Flowers." We certainly have had a lot of rain these past few weeks! This week we will be creating a piece of artwork that shows all the rain we have been getting. Don't worry, there will be a rainbow that comes through!
We will start by holding our paper vertically also known as portrait view in art. You should draw a line from one side of the paper to the other. This line is called our horizon line. It should be around the middle of the paper. Always start with pencil.
We will now draw puddles that our rain will drip onto. (The rain will be drawn later.) Start with an oval anywhere below the line you drew. Then draw 2 more ovals inside of your original one.
Good job! We need a lot of puddles so continue to fill the bottom half of the paper with lots of ovals for puddles.
Let's add our rainbow to brighten up our day! I drew 7 lines curved down for my rainbow. Later I will color in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Add an 8th line if you want pink in your rainbow.
Rain, rain , go away, come again another day...the rain has come! Here is how I would like you to draw your rain drops. Start at each puddle and draw a dashed line from the puddle up to the top of the page. Do this for every puddle you have. I drew my rain in green so it was easier to see.
The next step is to color in your rainbow. You should use craypas if you have them at home. They work best when you are painting with watercolors over them. If you don't have craypas you can use crayons.
Now we have one more step to do before we paint. You should take a white craypas (or white crayon) and trace over all the pencil you just drew. Everything should be traced except for the rainbow.
After you trace everything you are ready to paint with watercolors. You should use only blue and black paint. You can use more than one shade of blue if you have it. As you paint your colors should blend together when they touch. This is a beautiful thing!

When you are all done painting, you should let it dry and then hang it up! Brighten someone else's day with your artwork. Remember the famous quote by Maya Angelou, "try to be a rainbow in someone else's cloud."
