Alice Emily Turk is my great great grandmother, she was born on the 15th of March 1872. She lived with her parents in Eastnor England and she was an only child. Her parents' names were Rebecca and James Turk.
In 1883, Alice was eleven, the family sailed to New Zealand on a ship called the Doric. After three months of sailing, they finally arrived and settled in Auckland. The reason they left Eastnor England and came to New Zealand was that they got told it was a good country to live in and a better environment.
When they got to New Zealand, her parents started work at the Parnell Rose Gardens. Alice attended Wellesley Primary School. When Alice was twelve years old her family moved to Mangere to manage a farm.
Alice was very musical and she was in productions in the Town Hall from her teenage years. Music played a big part of her life; she was even in a Gilbert and Sullivan production a few times. Gilbert and Sullivan were partners in the theatre the dramatist Gilbert and the composer Sullivan. Alice also enjoyed cooking and was told she was very good at it. She was creative she enjoyed doing art and other people's art as well. Alice was bright but women in those days did less paid jobs which meant she spent more time doing creative things.
On November the 12th Alice got married to Willam James Harrison at St Matthew's Cathedral in Auckland city. James made motor cars for a living and Alice was a stay at home mum
Within a few years, they had 4 children, the oldest Willam James Harrison named after his father, was born on the 31st of August 1896. The second child Thomas Leslie Harrison
was named after his grandfather on his father's side. Thomas Leslie was called “Puck '' by friends and family and was born on the 30th of March 1900. The 3rd child was Ursula Rebbeca Harrison she was named after her grandmother, Ursula was born on the 2nd of August 1905 sadly Ursula died at the age of 1 from pneumonia, and Alice never got over it. Lastly, the youngest Alice Murial but she always preferred to go by her last name and was also named after her mother Alice Emily. She was born on the 5th of October 1907 she is my Nanas Nana.
My Nana told me that Alice Turk was a very kind person and mother.
