Man Doan is my Popba, he is my dad's dad. He was born in Vietnam around 1957. I call him my Popba because in Vietnamese ba is dad and I added pop and made Popba.
When Man was growing up, he would play volleyball and soccer. In soccer, he was a goalkeeper and defender. He really enjoyed swimming. He had five sisters and two brothers. Popba didn’t have a lot of stories to share about his childhood - I think it's because of the war at the time.
As Man got older, he was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. He was a soldier from south vietnam who fought alongside america aganist the north vietnamese (vietcong) and fought with guns for a couple years. He later esacped the war on a fish boat and went to a refugee camp in Thailand. As my Popba has broken English, he has not been able to tell me the dates.
He arrived in New Zealand around 1977 and met my nana sometime after that.
My popba got married to my Nana and had two children. He had my Dad, Minh and my Aunty Trinh. Later on, my Nana and my Popba had a divorce. They had two kids, my Aunty ,and my Dad. My Dad had me and my brother, River, with my mum Melissa. My Aunty Trinh had kids with my Uncle Carl they had my cousins Devon and Piper. We all live in Auckland, New Zealand, we are all 1/4 Vietnamese.
He is special because if he wasn't able to escape the war I would not be here neither my dad. He comes to our house from time to time to look after us when my parents aren't there. He told me stories about the Vietnam war. He only told me about how the Americans ran away and left the South Vietnamese to defend for them selfs and they left their tanks and weapons. I thought they were quite cool stories knowing that he had fought in a famous war.
