Lila Mary Deverdaux was born in 1922 in Wellington New Zealand. She is my great- grandma.
Lila Mary Deverdaux was born on the 12 of July 1922 to her Mother Anna James and her father George Deverdaux in Wellington, New Zealand. She was born an only child but later had two younger brothers John Deverdaux and then George Deverdaux. She had a happy childhood and was well liked by both kids and adults. When Lila was 12 her mother remarried to George Tucker. A year later Anna James and George Tucker had a baby girl named Yvonne (Lilas youngest sibling). She left school at the young age of 13 despite being very bright so she could help with the family finances. She went to work in a sewing factory. During her time at the factory she became engaged to a young soldier. Unfortunately he was killed in the war fighting for his country.
After her heartbreak she continued working in the factory until 1945 when she married a young member of the navy named Jack Sherman. Around the age of 25 Lila had her first child, a baby girl named Patsy (My Nanna) followed two years later by a little boy called Jhonathan. Around the same time as the birth of Jhonathan the family got a cat named Timmy. Finally another little boy was born six years later called Maxwell. Lila was a great reader and as well as constantly going to the local library, every friday the family would go to the farmers in hobson street to get library books out in their book-filled basement. Patsy always chose a cowboy book for her father as it was his favourite read. This was a regular family outing and was carried out for years. They also had lots of picnics at point chev beach in the summer. Another common family outing was a trip to mission bay to admire the fountain and get an ice cream. She was also a great baker, chef, sewer and knitter.
Lila was a stay at home wife and mother until 1960 when her eldest turned 13. She then went back to a factory to sew raincoats for a further 5 years before moving into the retail sector working at George courts. She lived to meet her grandchildren Siobhan and Andrew. But narrowly missed the birth of Elliot Mckimmy, her first great Grandchild.
Lila died in Febuary 2006 of a heart attack at the age of 86. Jack lived another 5 years and died in December 2011 leaving behind four great-grandchildren, Elliot, Lila, Daisy and 2 month old Trilby. The reason I chose Lila was because of the impact her love and influnce has had on my Mum, Nanna and Uncle and all the fond memories they have of her.
