Unui Doo was born in Xinhui in China in 1873. She was born in a small village and her dad was a farmer. Her birth name was Chan Yau Nui but they called her Unui.
They used to bound her feet so they dont grow to big - a custom in China. She didnt have a education but she was good at business and had good social skills.
On 20 September 1898 she married Thomas Wong Doo from her village, they met on one of his visits from Auckland back to China. Thomas travelled between China and Auckland for his job. They had a daughter and two sons.
Unui received a letter saying they were going to visit him in Auckland after them saving money he bought a garden market and a grocery shop he had also been naturalising back in 1904.
A little later in 1914, Unui and her two sons moved to Auckland. They finally arrived and the first thing she did was unbound her feet. After a few years, they got married again because of New Zealand rules and another daughter and son were born.
I've only seen her once in my life when I was a baby or something at my grandads house at the pool table. I think she was pretty famous.
