Ethel Wortt.
I’m doing my Pieces of Me Research Project on my Great, Great Aunt, Ethel. She was born in Portsmith, England in 1908.
When Ethel was younger, she had six siblings. When she was nine, her father died and she started working as a scullery maid at age 12. Ethel’s older sister had to take care of them. I don't really know much else about her childhood.
Ethel lived with her partner Tom, but since they were never married. It caused a lot of the family to stop speaking to her since back then it was frowned upon she also never had kids.
She worked for Edwina, Countess of Mountbatten who was Aunt to Prince Philip ( husband to the Queen) and she probably met both of them. She traveled a lot and collected all sorts of strange things. I sadly don't have any photos of Ethel because when my mum was about 13 her parent divorced and had a terrible relationship the photos were burnt.
Apparently, she was a bit crabby but not to my mum and my mum loved her. Ethel disliked her brother-in-law for some reason. She also liked to knit. She knitted my mum a really ugly jumper once and she had to wear it every time she saw her. Ethel sadly passed away in 1993 at age 85 from natural causes I never got to meet her.
The end.
