Ficus thonningii
Ficus thonningii
The Ficus thonningii can grow over 20 metres in height and has a low, dense, rounded crown. It is especially unique in that it is considered epiphytic—meaning that it initially develops on a host species, then strangles the tree it is being hosted by to death. While there are other “strangler figs” found throughout Kenya, the Ficus thonningii is most common. Known as Mugumo in Kikuyu, is is widespread throughout many places in Africa, from Ethiopia to the Cape Verde Islands, down to South African and Angola. When the plant is injured, it produces a unique white latex. Its figs are 1.5 cm and vary in size and texture. Most are yellow or purple-red when ripe.
