Dombeya torrida
Dombeya torrida
The Dombeya torrida has heart-shaped leaves and flowers which hand on long stalks. It provides excellent shade once it has matured to 12-15 metres in height with many branches. In Kenya’s upland open forests, this tree attracts a number of bees beneath its umbrella crown. The roots and bark are known for their medicinal properties, but this tree is also quite versatile for other uses, including firewood, mulch, and soil improvement. However, because of its shade and litter effect, the top-tier improved soil closest to the tree typically does not yield many crops. In the Kikuyu language, this tree is known as Mukeu.
