Acokanthera schimperi
Acokanthera schimperi
In Kenya, you might find the Acokanthera schimperi in bushland along rocky hillsides, especially on red or black rocky soils. Known in Kikuyu communities as the Muricu, this tree is also found across East Africa, and south to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, and South Africa. It grows at a moderate rate and has cultural significance in many Kenyan tribes for its use as arrow poison. To prepare the poison, one must boil roots from the Muricu in a secluded place for up to ten hours. The entire plant, however, is poisonous, with the exception of the ripened fruit. In fact, birds have been known to drop dead while sucking on flowers from this tree.

Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.
