Summary of Reading in 40 words:
There is no definition of abstract art, it gives people the freedom to think open-mindedly. Understanding abstract art is not easy. People would think that abstract art is easy and even children could do it. But that is not the case, the best abstract art artists are the best at understanding color. They can even draw a perfect realistic portrait but they choose not to. Instead, they chose to express their creativity another way.

WONDER
(Develop Curiosity)
What do you see?
I see many shapes in the painting, mainly rectangles and squares. There are only a few colors in the canvas which are yellow, grey and a little bit of beige.
What are the subjects in the Artwork?
Social Studies, Visual Arts, Materials and Process.
What are the Elements of Art used in the Artwork?
Lines, shapes and color.
What are some subjects in the foreground, middle ground and background of the Artwork?
Abstract art.
How are the subject matters arranged?
They are all packed and squeezed together.
Why did you think the artist arranged the subjects in this manner?
I think his subjects are less recognizable, in part because he deliberately avoided using any suggestion of volume as the scaffolding fades at the painting’s edges.
What do you think the Artist is trying to communicate in the artwork? How does the artwork make you feel?
I think the artist is giving an example of his new approach. He was actually illustrating a tree by interlocking black lines and planes of colors. He also limited his palette to close-valued ochre and gray tones that recall Cubist canvases.
This artwork made me feel very interested in abstract art because it has a deeper meaning behind the art. This makes me very fascinated about this artwork.
How do you think the elements of art were used to convey the Artist's intentions?
I think the lines and color plays an important role in the artwork. The color is very neutral which includes grey, dark yellow.
How was principles of design used to communicate and idea/ emotion?
Mondrian was inspired by the Cubist paintings of Georges Braque at a 1911 exhibition in Amsterdam which inspired him to go to Paris. This subject was painted in 1912, exemplifying Mondrian's regard for the new technique.
Why do you think the Artist emphasized certain element in the work?
The artist broke down his motif which in this case is a tree into a scaffolding of interlocking black lines and planes of color and his chosen palette resembles cubist canvases, but he went further and his subject is less recognizable as his scaffolding fades at the paintings edges.
He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neoplasticism. This was the new 'pure plastic art' which he believed was necessary in order to create 'universal beauty'. To express this, Mondrian eventually decided to limit his formal vocabulary to the three primary colors (red, blue and yellow), the three primary values (black, white and gray) and the two primary directions (horizontal and vertical).
What are you curious about the Artwork?
I'm curious about the choice of his colors and what inspired him to choose only three colors to be in this piece of artwork.
What are you wonder about the Artist's thought processes?
I wonder why he's art was highly utopian and was concerned with a search for universal values and aesthetics.
I also wonder what he meant by "Art is higher than reality and has no direct relation to reality. To approach the spiritual in art, one will make as little use as possible of reality, because reality is opposed to the spiritual. We find ourselves in the presence of an abstract art. Art should be above reality, otherwise it would have no value for man."
What is interesting to you about this Artwork? And why?
The shapes and rectangles that make up the whole of the artwork.
Are there any areas such as the title, style, or medium of the artwork that you are unsure and would like to know more?
I'm interested about the art style the artist has chosen and why he wanted to use it to illustrate the piece.
What do you like to keep, destroy or replace? Why?
I would like to keep the whole art because I think it's very good art work that allows me to explore the different types of abstract art
I would like to replace some of the colors with more vibrant and radiant ones so that the art work will look lively and full of life.
Week 2: Understanding Abstract Art
Sketches - Circles and Bubbles, Pyramids, Organic Folds
circles (2d) and bubbles (3d)
the page is decorated with circles and also a few overlapped bubbles. the overlapped bubbles are shaded with lines and patterns. symmetry is a quality in which both sides of a composition have the same elements in the same position, as in a mirror image or the two sides of a face.
triangles (2d) and pyramid (3d)
the page is filled with pyramids and the shading from different sides. balance refers to the visual weight of the elements of the composition. it is a sense that the painting feels stable and "feels right." in the drawing, i made many pyramids to balance out the art.
curves (origami folds)
pattern is the uniform repetition of any of the elements of art or a combination thereof. anything can be turned into a pattern through repetition. the classic patterns that i used in the art was spirals and shapes.
Week 3 to 5: Wire Sculpting Units
The Cuboid, Pyramid and Perfect Sphere
An open-cube structure: consisting of a square, a triangle, a rectangle and square base.
My Challenges: (30 words)
It was really hard to bend the wire especially because I did not have long nails to do so. I struggled with it for quite long as I still could not get the hang of it. I used a lot of my strength to press it and even so, the wire did not really listen to me and twisted the other way around. I tried banging it on the table but to no avail.
My Strategies to overcome them: (30 words)
I found out that there was actually a strategy to overcome this challenge. I took a look around the classroom, observing my classmates and watching them attempt to bend the wire and follow the teacher's instructions. I saw many of them using their fingertips to press it on the table. So, I followed suit and used the table's help to bend it. Fortunately, it worked.
