The artist likely wanted to showcase the main subject of the painting, to bring the attention to the tree.

Trees without leaves usually indicate that it is not receiving the nutrients and water it needs, thus the artist could be communicating that he or she or something in their life is feeling down or not doing well. They are withering away and are in need of these nutrients and water, which could also be symbolic of care and reassurance.

The contrasting and dark colours show how solemn it is and evokes emothions like sadness and sorrow.

Theres not much going on in the background, just a vast space, Artists tend to have certain colours in the background to show emotions or are similar to the subject, however the background is completely different from the subject.
