The Torchbearer, featuring Phil Robertson, makes a strong argument about the absurdity of life without God. Robertson takes viewers on a journey through history. In my opinion, it’s a powerful film that highlights how religion has played a major role throughout history.
A lot of the events Robertson focuses on have a religious aspect. The core idea is that life without God leads to moral and cultural decline. For example, in ancient Rome, religion was based on polytheism, and the people believed their gods influenced everyday life. They tried to keep their gods happy through rituals and offerings. This belief system was shaped by Greek and Etruscan cultures.
Similarly, ancient Greece had a rich pantheon of gods and goddesses who were believed to live on Mount Olympus. These deities had human traits and emotions, and the Greeks also honored spirits of nature and legendary heroes. In Italy, the concept of God evolved from polytheism in ancient Rome to monotheism with the rise of Christianity and the Catholic Church. Christianity spread there in the first century and gradually replaced earlier beliefs.
In Paris, France, religion has also changed over time. Catholicism once dominated, but events like the French Revolution led to a rise in irreligion and religious diversity. In Athens, religion was deeply woven into everyday life, with temples, shrines, and ancestor worship. According to the Baptist Messenger, Paul’s visit to Athens in Acts 17 shows how he addressed these complex beliefs.
The film also explores how Germanic tribes transitioned to Christianity, sometimes voluntarily, especially during the 6th century, through Catholic missionaries. It even touches on the moral debates surrounding the atomic bomb. While its creation was scientific and political, the devastation caused people to search for meaning and led to both religious condemnation and reflection.
Overall, looking at how different cultures have viewed religion over time is fascinating. It shows how much human beliefs about gods and spirituality have shaped our world. The Torchbearer raises important questions about what happens when faith is removed from history. I highly recommend watching it—it might change how you see the world, or maybe it won’t. That’s up to you.
