Mufasa, Disney’s new CGI film exploring Simba’s father’s origin story, recently debuted to mixed reviews. While some viewers praised it, many critics leaned negative
Critics say the characters lack expression, due to their lifeless and “realistic” animation. Many feel the 2D animation's unique, cartoonish style was lost, despite the existence of a storyboard that was more interesting than what was in the movie.
The producers could have still used the 3D look they wanted but gave the lions the same style as the 2D animations, using more expression, whimsy, and excitement.
Don’t get me wrong. I still loved the movie, since The Lion King has been my favorite Disney movie since I was a kid. However, I’m disappointed in the lack of soul put into the animation. The scenery was beautiful, however. The water is fluid and the flood at the beginning is exciting and gives viewers a rush of adrenaline. The best part of the scenery might have been the mountains and the snow.
The story was decent, but I would have liked to know more about the outsiders introduced. There was a lot of potential to share how these characters managed to come together.
This is my personal opinion, with a few others’ thoughts mixed in. Overall, a good movie, but could have been better. But, “Hakuna mata”. If you checked out Mufasa, what are your thoughts?
