“I have always loved animals since I was a little kid,” said Lydia Bricco, senior at Menasha High School. “When I was younger I always had this interest in researching the different kinds of animals, and their care.”
Bricco watched many different veterinary shows and human medical shows when she was younger. As she got older and decided on a major for college, she realized she wanted to enter the veterinary field.
Bricco gained experience helping animals in middle school. Her neighborhood had a massive cat problem– cats kept on reproducing and having large litters of kittens. When the problem got out of control, Bricco and her mom created a plan to gather all the stray kittens and get them to an animal shelter. This would help the kittens get adopted to their forever homes.
Bricco also helped aid dogs on the street or not in good environments to find a home. To expand her experiences in animal care she volunteered at an animal shelter.
As Bricco looks to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine, she made sure ahead of time that path seemed right.
“I shadowed a local veterinary clinic as they were performing everyday exams on patients as well as when they were performing surgeries on their patients.”

Bricco’s college journey includes multiple schools. First she will go to UW-River Falls for animal science. After she’s done there, she plans to go to UW-Madison for veterinary medicine. She needs an undergraduate degree to take the prerequisites for veterinary medicine.
Bricco hopes to gain more animal experience from general care and interaction with animals to the medical side. Bricco hopes that experience will be able to prepare her for the start of her schooling at Madison Veterinary School.
She plans after college to work at a local vet clinic as either an emergency veterinarian or large animal veterinarian.
“My advice for anyone looking to pursue a career in veterinary medicine is don't be discouraged by the amount of schooling or the possible negativity of others,” Bricco said. “If you truly believe that this is the path for you, then don't let anyone stop you in your pursuit of your dreams.”
