Poll Results:
Last week, we asked you about your work and financial experience post-tax season. We found that a large majority (80+%!) have a job currently. Everybody polled was employed, and one person said they worked over the summer, and another said they have at least 2 jobs. Out of those, about half said they work 10-20 hours a week. Two people even said they work 30+ hours a week!
Luckily, the majority (~40%) of people said they don’t feel work interferes with their life much. Another 30% said they feel it interferes with their social life, and unfortunately, 23% said it interferes with everything.
Unsurprisingly, about 70% of people said they spend the most money on food (which, yeah, same). The same number of people said that they have money saved for post-graduation (good job, everybody)!
A small majority of people said they manage their own finances, but an almost equal number said that the responsibility is between themself and their parents, and thank goodness, a large majority said that they know how credit cards and credit scores work, though an equal number said they understand credit cards and not credit scores. (In case you didn’t know, a credit score is a number out of 800 that lenders like banks use to guess how trustworthy you are with paying back debt. Higher numbers are better, but they take time to build up. To get the score, you need to pay back a loan/debt on something like a credit card, a car, or some other loan over multiple months. It can be tricky and strange, so ask a responsible adult if you want to know more! Or me. I know stuff sometimes.)
Most people did not file taxes this year (lucky). Those who did said it was easy enough, which is good! If you ever need help, feel free to ask for help from a financial teacher, or even someone like a counselor or a trusted teacher. One student said that Financial Literacy was a great help to them, and I’m really glad that we require students to take a money management class. It’s something that will always affect your life, no matter who you are, so it’s great to have a starting point!
This one was really interesting. If you want to give your input and take the poll yourself, it’s linked here! You can also check out our new poll on summer plans and summer memories linked here! Hope you’re as ready as I am for summer break!
