“In all my life I have had four cats, five dogs, three snakes, two guinea pigs, and two turtles,” said Marilyn Draves, junior at Menasha High School.
Even though World Animal Day was in October, there’s truly never a bad time to appreciate the many kinds of pets and what they do for us-- and she happens to have a variety.
Draves said she has three snakes, all of which are ball pythons.
“The oldest is Jörgen, who is ten; the middle is Sergei, who is about five; and the youngest is Gus Gus who is about three.”
She also has a 9-year-old cat named Theo.
Snakes don’t have quite the same needs as a dog or cat but still have the basic needs of any other pet.
“We have the snakes in a cage, taking them out often, and their feeding schedules change with their ages,” said Draves. “While the cats and dogs eat every day, with one cat going outside being monitored, the dog gets a walk almost every day.”
She also mentions that a couple of the snakes' ages are only estimates due to taking them in from previous owners.
“We got Jörgen from an old neighbor, a friend of my mother’s,” Draves said. “Sergei we got from a previous owner, and Gus Gus my mom got because he looked sad in a picture.”
Although the less cold-blooded pets are more common, they still have their quirks. Draves talks about her previous dog and cat, mentioning how they “never got along, but cuddled in secret.”
Of the pets in her household, Gus Gus is the one that truly belongs to her, earning a slight bias of favoritism in his direction. “I would say Gus Gus is my favorite because he is my pet, but I love them all.”
