Menasha isn't the biggest city, but it has its highlights. One of the many is the Elisha D. Smith Public Library, which recently reopened after a revolutionary $9 million renovation. If you have not seen pictures of the progress or the finished space, check out the library website - https://www.menashalibrary.org/renovation
It is no longer just a recreational space for some peaceful reading, it is now fully equipped with 3D printers, engravers, laser and water jet cutters, a recording studio, and a fully furnished kitchen.
Changes many times are viewed with mixed feelings. While many people view this as a newfound center for resources and plan to utilize it in the coming days, not all community members are elated.
“It’s very, very modern,” an anonymous source says. “I’m sure some people really like it, but it’s just so white, and really open. I miss the more muted colors and cozy atmosphere.”
Others feel similarly, and said it feels like ‘an office’ or ‘a clinic’.
The opinions are still split, however; as others do truly appreciate the new amenities.
“I am very excited to check out their new kitchen,” said an anonymous source.
Another anonymous source said, “I’m definitely looking forward to the new events they will be able to host there.”
The library certainly does feature more of the ideals of a contemporary building to promote both interest and interaction.
“It’s really a great place. I do believe that restoration is a natural process to come, but they might have gone too far,” they remark, “It is a nice place, just not really a library. More of a resource center, I suppose.”
Regardless of personal opinions on the newest feature of Menasha, it can’t be denied that this was an impactful change to a historic building, which everyone hopes will change the city for the better.
*Note on the sources: Community members, which include students, wanted to share their thoughts but preferred to be anonymous in the opinion article.
