Poll Results:
Last week for our ACT survey, we found that 53.8% of people said that they felt their ACT score did not represent them (30.8% said it does represent them, 15.4% other), another 53% said that they felt it should not be important to colleges (15.4% felt it should, 30.8% other), and 61% of students said that schools should focus on stress relief during the ACT season (therapy dogs, mental health tips, and more breaks).
When asked to share more, students disagreed with many aspects of the ACT. “It can be a good thing to measure a student, BUT it shouldn't be the only thing,” said one surveyee. “If you're someone like me who is not going to college, the ACT is just another test that you are required to take,” says another. “The fact that the tests are all in one day makes the scores less accurate by sleep (and) stress,” wrote a third student. “... (The ACT) literally fried my brain.”
Overall, agreements with the ACT were few. As more colleges allow students to exempt themselves from including ACT/SAT results, the question of the usefulness of these tests is growing more pointed. Where do you stand?
