Native American Heritage Month is rolling in hot, with the date starting on November 1 and continuing until November 30th. This month is to honor not only major Native Americans like Sitting Bull, Little Big Horn and many more. We are also honoring living Native Americans in the USA.
Some of the values of Native American Heritage Month is the history. Long ago, there was land that was stolen by colonizers in the 1800s. Some of the Native’s here in Wisconsin were pushed out of their homeland.
I am part of the Oneida Tribe, and my Tribe was based in New York but moved to Green Bay on August 18, 1821. Women and men were fighting for their lives and their children, not only fighting, but there was rape, murder, abuse, segregation, and more. A lot of other tribes were also moved. There were boarding schools for Native Americans to change how they looked and how they spoke. There was a time when Native Americans would speak in their native language when they were beaten. There is a quote from that time that was the white man's motto: “Kill the Indian, save the man”.
Most of the tribes here in Wisconsin are part of a confederacy, like the Iroquois Confederacy, which is the umbrella that connects all five main tribes in the area of land. The Haudenosausee Confederacy was the original name for the Iroquois Confederacy, but the confederacy is an umbrella for the tribe names like: Oneida, Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga, Tuscarora. Those are the five main Tribes in Wisconsin. Knowing this information, you should take the time and read about these tribes because these people were here before anyone claimed this land and colonized it.
I am Zha’Miya-Ann Michelle Joyce Schultz. I am a proud Native American young lady who is part Native American. I am part of the two out of five main tribes, which are Onieda and Mohawk. My clan is a representation of the Wolf Clan. The Wolf Clan is known for its Path Finders. Knowing this, I am proud to be somewhat recognized for my cultural reputation.
I hope you take the and research the tribes and Native Americans around you, and also think about the land you are living on.
