The global problem of recycling is constantly changing, so how can we students help to solve this issue?
We can start with basic things, such as at home and at restaurants, and throw your plastics and cans in the recycling bin when you're done with them.
As a student myself, I notice many of the classroom recycling bins have random garbage in it or even the garbage has items that should be recycled. If we as a community can realize the importance of taking care of the planet, we can greatly improve the pollution and garbage problem.
MHS custodian, Mr. Wilson explained the different bins. He said the everyday recycling like paper, plastic, and aluminum is commingled recycling. The day time cleaning crew will empty garbage cans in the hallways, while the night cleaning staff cleans the classrooms. Then there is a recycling bin out back where the recycling items go.
Mr. Wilson said, “Any metals, other than aluminum cans, we take to the City garbage or other metal recycling facilities. Electronics are brought to electronic recycling facilities by maintenance staff.”
It’s too common for random garbage or recycling to end up in people’s yards or on railroad tracks or at parks. I encourage you to do what you can when you see garbage.
We shouldn’t only celebrate taking care of the earth on Earth Day; it’s important to do it everyday. If you have nothing to do and it’s a beautiful day outside, get some gloves, grab a bag, and start picking up some trash. Not only does it help out the environment in Menasha, but you’ll also feel like a good person for doing it. Picking up trash, recycling, or even choosing to bike on a nice day instead of driving can make a difference.
