A simple pin can have a big message.
While safety pin jewelry often is linked to punk or goth culture, a safety pin necklace has a certain meaning. It can represent a promise to stay strong mentally and keep on going, or it can be used as a sign of safety and solidarity, someone you can talk to.
I made my safety pin necklace in July and have worn it every day since then. I found this idea through a TikTok video and it was something that resonated with me.
Since I like punk fashion myself, the necklace blends with my outfits well. But, to the people close to me it represents the promise I’ve made. That I’m someone who is open to listening and talking to people about their mental health.
I got the idea to try and start something at MHS with the necklace when I realized how it impacted those around me. I told one of my friends about my necklace and it inspired them to make their own.
If you feel comfortable being a support to others and want to wear one there are a few options. While you can find something like it on Amazon, I strongly encourage you to make it your own. It’s incredibly easy to DIY something like this. I found one of my old necklaces and broke off the clasp that held it together, then poked the safety pin through and shut the pin so it held the chain together.
I believe this is a beautiful symbol, especially for those who work with mental health or those who struggle with it. The symbol means something to the people close to you and helps bring you closer together. The symbol holds you together—like a safety pin.
