Some of you might have thought about taking an AP class, but had some uncertainties. Though classes are booked for next year, you might consider an AP course further down the road if you are a freshman or sophomore this year.
Menasha School District gives students’ opportunities to take AP classes. This might seem scary to some freshmen or people who have not taken an AP course before, but interested students are encouraged to look into the courses.
AP classes are available for any field, from United States’ history to chemistry. Many people are afraid to take AP classes because of the reputation of their grade.
The Menasha Course Description Guide states:
“AP courses at MHS are designed for diligent, motivated students who have mastered the curriculum and it is recommended that a B or better has been earned in previous coursework”
“Some students think that AP courses might be ‘too hard’ and avoid the challenge,” said Sara Berceau, AP biology teacher. “I would counter argue that if you are thinking that college may be in your future, this type of class is the exact challenge that you should give yourself.”
The AP class helps prepare students to take the AP exam. Based on the test score, students can earn college credits.
“Challenging yourself while in a supportive high school environment can allow you to see what you really can do academically,” Berceau said.
Elizabeth RIddle, junior at MHS agrees that AP classes are beneficial because you can earn college credits at a cheaper price than when you are in college.
Riddle has taken a variety of AP courses and has earned 15 credits so far. This will save her money later down the road in college.
“Most people don't want to take a class, because they are afraid of not getting the credit or it would be too hard,” Riddle said. “But it's worth it.”
AP courses are not only beneficial for college credits. Scholarships and groups such as the National Honor Society, look at the rigor of courses selected by students. Seeing that students are not afraid to take on a challenge can weigh in the students’ favor.
The Menasha School District has a lot of opportunities for students. If you are unsure if you are a good fit, talk to your counselor or one of the teachers of the AP courses.
