Audrey Lopez-Stane found herself capturing wrestling matches her sophomore year. Mr. Mueller, head wrestling coach, asked Lopez-Stane to photograph dual meets. She slowly learned the ins and outs of the wrestling team and soon loved being there.
“I had seen the hard work of the wrestlers, coaches, and manager,” Lopez-Stane said, “and how much commitment, discipline, and especially friendship lay within the team.”
She then decided to go down the path of being the wrestling team manager the following year.
When it was time for her first day as the manager it was fun, but a bit confusing because the team had all new managers that year. Although the managers quickly found their way.
Even though there were mistakes that encountered, Lopez-Stane said, “We knew we were all still learning, and we were having fun navigating the way of being a manager.”
Lopez-Stane enjoyed managing with two of her close friends, who kept her company and made being the manager of the wrestling team even more enjoyable. She also made new friends amongst the other managers.
Her other favorite part she loved was the sports itself. She enjoyed watching the matches.
For Audrey, being the manager of the wrestling team helped shape her into who she is today. She found that being the wrestling manager helped shift her view, and she better understood self-discipline and hard work too.
“I've seen how much each wrestler puts into practice every single day, and it still baffles me. I'm not even a wrestler myself and I know how much dedication and moment it takes to be one”.
Lopez-Stane learned to overcome her limits and to continue working hard every day even if tiredness kicks in.
“I've also become so obsessed with and invested in the sport to the point of no return,” Lopez-Stane said, “so I will continue to keep up with whatever is going on in the wrestling world.
Wrestling helped her a lot with her leadership skills, time management, and even mental discipline. Audrey sees managing the wrestling team as a full-time job with practice, dual meets, twelve-hour long tournaments.

Lopez-Stane has many supporters. Some of her biggest supporters are the other managers (Liv, Em, Ruby, Madi, and Aerin). They are people she's been able to turn to, since they’re all in the same boat they can understand and relate to each other. They all understand managing the wrestling team can be difficult sometimes and stressful, and appreciate they have each other.
"While it is a lot of fun you have to lock in after the wrestling weigh-in so you can do your job smoothly.” .
Lopez-Stane will be attending college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and will be starting in fall.
She plans on majoring in journalism with a minor in political science to become a foreign political correspondent.
“I love traveling and I am passionate about world news,” she said, " so journalism is really the career for me.”
Lopez-Stane is a student journalist for the “Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service”. She would love to become the manager for the UW-Madison Badger wrestling team, but also realizes the huge commitment that job is for a college student. She plans on going to the home meet of the Badger wrestling team. She'll be supporting and cheering from the bleachers.
Lopez-Stane’s words of encouragement to anyone interested in following in her path is:
“I would say if you were going to manage any sport, it would have to be this one. You will definitely not regret joining the wrestling program. Even though I may be biased, wrestling is the best sport in the world. It takes a lot of discipline and commitment to be a part of the team overall because once you're in it, you're in it. It's so unique and different from any other sport that you get all new experiences from being involved. I am incredibly lucky to have been a part of the team for these past 3 years, and I definitely would not have been the same person without it. I am happy to say that wrestling will follow me throughout my entire life, and I highly encourage anyone to join the amazing Menasha Wrestling Team as soon as they can.”
