Why play Quidditch?
A good chunk of kids have seen the Harry Potter movie series or read the books. They know what it is.
Not all our students like traditional sports like football, soccer, basketball, etc.
Your book loving children will be ECSTATIC. They will talk to you about what “house” they are a part of, which of the books/movies are their favorite.
The Team Shake app happens to use the 4 colors of the Hogwarts houses. Easy peasy team assignments!
A muggle is a “non-magical” person in the books/movies.
This is how us non-flying folks play!
Colleges around the country have formed their own teams.
Ninh Explains YouTube videos are GREAT for explaining games and sports to students!
At Honey, we blend the SPARK rules with Ninh's explanation. If tagged (not pegged) with a bludger, drop the quaffle, run to your goal, and touch it. The teacher throws the “Golden Snitch” tennis ball anytime, and the Seeker can score by catching it before it stops. The SPARK Seeker can also run with the quaffle to score. I remind Seekers not to stare at me or I won’t throw it! If a team is wearing football belts, the seeker will wear a jersey with their belt designating them as the seeker.
No tackling or purposeful physical contact or kicking the ball like we see in Ninh’s directions.
We don’t use broomsticks, just running is fine!
All goals are worth 1 point, and Snitches are worth 2. During All Play, scoring a goal adds a point to the team it was scored on, while catching the Snitch subtracts 2 points from the Seekers' team since you aim for the lowest score.
I update everyone on the scores in between rounds so the kids know who is in the lead.
Sometimes kids crowd the goal unnecessarily. Only goalkeepers and players with bludgers should be near it. Since we don’t allow tackling, beaters who have a bludger are the only way to stop an chaser with a quaffle. If other players keep hanging out near the goal, I assign penalty points based on the game version we're playing. It could be adding or taking away a point.
I use sign language numbers to track scores on two goals simultaneously or tally points on a handheld whiteboard.
We play 3 different versions of Quidditch at Honey.
We will usually do version 1 for 1 or 2 days depending on how the kids are doing.
Version 2 is great because the "gung ho" kids can play against each other and the more chill kids can play against each.
Version 3 is so competitive and fun. My kids love 4 team Quidditch.
The goal of Four Team Quidditch is to have the lowest score.
Remember that getting the Golden Snitch will TAKE AWAY 2 points. on Four Team Quidditch.
And if chasers and seekers are standing around and crowding the goal, I will GIVE them a penaly point.
Sweet girl was so excited to get the golden snitch and bring it back to me! She was wearing a belt and a jersey which showed me she was the seeker. For the next round, she must give her seeker’s jersey to a different person.
Set up for 4 Team Quidditch with the Pugg pop up goals
The school does dress up days ever so often so it usually isn't an issue for the kids to come in their Harry Potter clothing. I also give the teachers a heads up that there might be some witches and wizards wondering the hallways but if their clothing is a distraction, they can be told to remove it and can only wear it to PE.
