Our campus will be conducting spinal screening of all female fifth grade students.
State law requires that schools must screen students for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance to the following schedule:
Girls will be screened two times, once at 10 (Fifth Grade) and again at age 12 (Seventh Grade)
Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (Eighth Grade)
Nurse Brown will check your child for signs of spinal problems like scoliosis.
Catching a spinal problem early can make the treatment much easier. Not treating spinal problems can lead to serious health problems.
The screening is simple. Nurse Brown will look at your child's back while she stands and bends forward.
Important Recommendations:
Students should bring shorts to school for the exam.
Girls should wear a thin t-shirt or a sports bra underneath their shirt on the day of the exam.
If girls are wearing a sports bra, it is recommended they remove their shirt for the screening.
The school will send you a letter if your child does not pass the screening. The letter will tell you how to follow up with a doctor. This screening is not a medical exam. Your child still needs to see a doctor for checkups.
If you do not wish to have your child screen for religious reasons, you must submit an exemptions to the school no later than April 23.
If you have questions, please reach out to Nurse Brown at endia.brown@lifeschools.net.

Test Anxiety
STAAR season has officially started and with it can come nervous feelings. Consider the following tips:
Positive mindset: Practice positive affirmations at home. Some examples are: "Even though I'm anxious, I can still do well." "I can get through this." "I can see myself passing this test."
Deep breathing: Sit in a comfy position and close your eyes (or look down). Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds, like you're smelling your favorite scent. Hold your breath for 4 seconds (or less if this becomes uncomfortable). Breath out through your mouth like you're blowing out birthday candles for 6 seconds. Repeat for at least 2 minutes.
Mindfulness: Close your eyes or look down. Imagine you are taking your test and remembering the answers.Tell yourself quietly, “I’m well prepared. I can get through this.” Imagine yourself getting your grades back and you met your goal! Gently smile and open your eyes.

College, Career, and Military Readiness Week is on May 6th to 9th. Above are the Dress up Days to celebrate that week. Please remember to wear uniform pants or uniform skirt on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, do not wear masks and do not have props. For Thursday, wear a college shirt with jeans or uniform pants/uniform skirt.
When you are ready to lead, you have the ability to influence the people around. You respect their beliefs and values, model desired behavior, are truthful, and able to gain understanding of everyone around you. You also abide by the laws and rules around you and expect others to do the same. When you model these characteristics, you are using the LifeLeader attribute ETHICAL LEADERSHIP.
We’re committed to supporting all students' social-emotional behavioral (SEB) and LifeLeader development. Join us in supporting the growth by scanning the QR code for weekly conversation starters to reflect on SEB and LifeLeader skills with your child.
