Why Students Should Be Able To Communicate In Class
By Sean Glynn
Does your teacher ever tell you to stop talking to your friends when you are working on the assignment together? What about if you have a question and the teacher is no use? While it is understandable why students can’t talk in class, communication is essential to a set of important skills, P.O.G skills.
What are these P.O.G skills, and why are they so important? P.O.G stands for Portrait Of A Graduate, and the P.O.G skills are skills all students graduating from high school should have. I’ve said skills many times, and it’s time to see what those skills are.
Communicator:
Communicating is arguably the most important skill of them all. Communication is vital to all aspects of adult life. If you want to get a job, you need communication to talk to an employer.Â
If you have a job that requires you to work with people, you need to be able to communicate with the customers. If there’s a fight or disagreement at work or in life, you need to be able to communicate with the other party effectively. This applies to students as well, as it is essential that they can communicate clearly and effectively with other students and teachers.Â
Collaborator
Collaboration goes well with communicators because they are closely linked. That job you were interviewing for earlier, well it requires you to be able to work with other employees. That fight you were in, well, if you were a good collaborator, it never would’ve started. And the friends that the student was talking with, is their partner on a project and have valuable insight that the teacher is stopping from being communicated.Â
Creative And Critical Thinker
Creative and Critical Thought is another one of the most important skills a person can possess. You got a job, but all of a sudden, oh no! The ice cream machine broke! If you have creative and critical thinking skills, you would easily be able to come up with a solution, like removing ice cream from the menu or hand-making it. That fight that you started, you know you can’t win, as your opponent is too big and strong. If you were a critical thinker, you would notice that this person has very bad eyesight, and run away. The student who was talking to their friend was creating ideas and theories that they could use in their projects through communication and collaboration.
Goal-Directed And Resilient
It doesn’t matter what job you’re in, being goal-directed and resilient is vital in a job. That task that no one else got done, you got done because you were goal-directed. That broken ice cream machine was fixed and made tons of money because you were resilient and creative and fixed it yourself. The student talking to their friend had created a goal and was working to get to it before the teacher stopped them, which is why they had to be resilient and try and finish anyway.Â
Ethical Citizen
Last but not least, we have being ethical citizens. That job you were signing up for, you were hired because of the work you did to help the homeless of the area. In that fight you were in, you let your moral compass guide you and apologized to the other person, and now your friends. The students were moral and collaborative by helping each other, and the only one not being ethical here was the teacher, not letting the students talk.Â
Overall, the P.O.G skills are important for students to use, and through communication, collaboration, creative thinking, resilience, and ethics, the students were able to complete the assignment without help front the teacher. This is why students should be allowed to talk in class, so they can be the best people they can be now and forever.Â
