E.I.Â
Helpful  or Unnecessary?

Do you get homework? Do you always have time to do it? Last year the school started a subject called “E.I.” E.I. was a work in progress last year but now it's been finalized bringing things like Reading Plus and MAP Accelerator (Khan Academy). The subject of E.I. is very controversial between both students and teachers. In this article we are going to dive into this subject to see what many teachers and students have to say about E.I.Â
What Is E.I.?
E.I. stands for Enrichment and Intervention. The enrichment part means to improve and expand on your current knowledge while the intervention part is the implication of things like Reading Plus and MAP Accelerator. The school made the concept of E.I. in 2022 (last year) but has gone through some changes since then. It used to be more like a “study hall” but now is used to improve on reading and math.Â
What The People Think
E.I is very controversial between all teachers and students as it has its benefits and downsides. Some think that E.I. as it is, is very helpful and has a positive impact on students’ education. On the other hand, it has also been leaving many people frustrated and even stressed because they feel they should be able to use the period as a study hall.
Some teachers saying things like “E.I. is supposed to be enrichment intervention. It is supposed to help students enhance their reading and math skills as that is something students have always struggled with. However, making kids finish the lessons for Reading Plus and MAP are two additional assignments on top of their other classes” and “I also see some frustration on the students' part. They are concerned they are not getting enough learning minutes to get a good grade in the allotted time. There are some conversations we as the teachers need to have to make sure we address some of the concerns and clearly explain the expectations, so we can alleviate that concern.” which shows that teachers do show concern and do watch how E.I goes.
But teacher’s also consider that it helps the student’s such as “I really like the idea of being able to target instruction where students are at. The two programs that we are using in E.I. seem to be very effective at the targeted instruction we are striving for.” and “(E.I.) I think as far as the Math skills are targeted to go where you're at, so every student is based on their individual skills. it gives you an immediate response on whether your answers are wrong or right.”
Overall, the opinion on E.I. is still a debatable subject with all of its pros and cons. Instead of having one way or another E.I. could end up being the best of both worlds like being able to get immediate responses, getting time to catch up on missing homework and improving your skills at your own speed.
