Plane Crash Near Pierre
Monday afternoon one person died and another person was injured after a single-engine airplane crash northwest of Pierre. A single-engine Piper Malibu Mirage flown by Eric Meyer left the Pierre Regional Airport around 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon heading to Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
At about 4:11 p.m., the pilot radioed Air Traffic Control to report an engine failure and that the aircraft would be returning to the Pierre Airport. But before they could get back to the airport, the pilot called 911. Emergency crews were immediately dispatched. Responders found the aircraft one mile north of Pierre and a half mile west of Highway. Both the pilot and a passenger were taken by ambulance to the hospital. The passenger, Hugh Alexander, was killed in the crash.Â
FAA investigators arrived at the scene early Tuesday afternoon. The Hughes County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash site has been released, and the Sheriff’s investigation has been concluded. Federal officials continue to investigate the exact cause of the crash. According to the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, a pilot reported that his aircraft had crashed northwest of Pierre near the Missouri River. Authorities responded and searched the area. The plane was found around 4:35 p.m. about one mile north of Pierre and half a mile west of Highway 1804, according to the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office. Two people were taken by ambulance to Avera St. Mary’s in Pierre The pilot is in stable condition, according to officials. The passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital.
