 Student Council: Value of Candidates

WELCOME TO ‘MERICA! 

Why is the student council so important? In our country we have the freedom to vote for our representatives and Douglas Middle School is no exception. In this article, we are talking about the value of our student council candidates. The student council is crucial to our school because the people we elect for these roles will be our representatives. To find the proper people for the job the school is hosting elections on Friday and it’s up to us to choose who we want to trust to hear out our ideas and change the school for the better. 

The Importance and Responsibilities of Roles

The different categories students voted for were President, Vice president, Secretary, and Treasurer. The role of the President is to oversee everything that goes on in the student council such as advertisement, creating events, and double-checking all the other positions within the student council. The role of the Vice President is to help and advise the president and stand in for the President's role temporarily when necessary. The role of the Secretary is to provide secretarial support to the principal and other administrative staff. The role of the Treasurer is to help the school keep track of funds and manage the school’s money for school events such as dances, field trips, and concessions at home games.

Candidates and Claims

The candidates made videos where they stated their claims and hopes such as the candidates for president, Lukus Whitlow, last year’s vice presedent, promising better dances and pitching ideas like “Donut Day'' and Robert Nelson, who was also in student council previous years, saying that he will participate at all meets and events possible. The next claims come from our Vice President canidates starting with Cooper Star stating he wants to give the students more freedom with phones and computers and perhaps improving lunch by extending the time and fundraising for playground equipment, Derrick Moore stating to hear out any problems the students have, and Eliana De Leon, a very active student who participates in, plays, conscessions the Anchored for Life program, the Patriot Squad, and fundraisers, claims that she will work hard to benefit and the school and help students have a positive experience. As for the role of secretary, Siri Carlson says she is well equiped to be secretary due to her experiences in past groups with very similar structures to the student council. Lastly is treasurer with only one candidate, Clara Feliz promises to be as active as possible for student council and school events.

Student council is essential because it's the place where you can get things you don’t like or do like changes to be better, or worse… For example, Lukas Whitlow claims that he would change the school for the better by “Making a donut day” to make the school more enjoyable and tolerable.  

Without student council changes students wouldn’t get a say on what the school wants to change, the student council gives us students a say in what we want the school to change, and many other things besides that.
