Is Biden the Best Choice for LGBTQ+ Voters in 2024?
Written By Callie and Lindon
Three major LGBTQ+ organizations including The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) Action Fund, and Equality PAC), have endorsed Biden for reelection on Tuesday, Oct 10, 2023. This day was the eve of National Coming Out Day, a day where LGBTQ+ are encouraged to embrace their authentic selves to the public, whether or not they will be accepted for it.
Recently, in America, Queer individuals, especially those of Transgender identities have been facing more resistance than in earlier years. People of the LGBTQ+ community have almost always been viewed as different- Because we are. But what the queer community really wants is to be treated as humans, not like monsters.
This is why Biden seems like the best choice for the LGBTQ+ community in the upcoming election of 2024. Biden has undoubtedly been the highest advocate for human rights, especially the rights of transgender people.
At the September monthly Republican primary debate, one of the candidates (Vivek Ramaswamy) stated, “Transgenderism, especially in kids, is a mental health disorder,”. Despite the fact that in 2012, “Transgenderism” was removed from the mental disorders list and is now known as “Gender Dysphoria”, which is exclusive to transgenderism. People used to believe that being transgender could be treated and “fixed” allegedly, but many people have moved on from those beliefs.Â
Biden has become a preferred candidate among the LGBTQ+ community because he suggests and promotes the safety of and dignity of Queer, Trans, and all LGBTQ+ individuals. Recently, on June 8th, 2023, Biden announced a future series of actions meant to enhance the safety of the LGBTQ+ community. The actions were centered around the goal to provide mental health care and protect Queer and trans youth.
Biden has shown support for the safety of the queer population ever since January of 2021 when he passed a law that disapproved of discrimination against anyone based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. This was a huge sense of relief for the LGBTQ+ community, allowing them to join the workforce and other things.
Now as the 2024 election rolls around, many queer individuals are hoping for either a better candidate or Biden’s reelection.
