A Message from Administration
Good afternoon GSES Community!
I hope everyone enjoyed some much needed time off with family and friends over the October Break! We are definitely getting into some wonderful fall weather.
This Wednesday and Thursday will mark the beginning of our family lunches in the atrium. If you have signed up (see the link below) please review the guidance. We will send out a communication to all those who have registered prior to your scheduled lunch. We look forward to seeing you this week!
As the colder weather approaches we know this may mean more people in the car rider line in the mornings. Prior to the cooler weather, we are serving about 345-365 cars each morning. We try our best to get everyone in the building by the time our first teaching segment begins, which is at 7:40. The car rider line opens at 6:50, which is about 20 minutes earlier than the golf cart rider line. I know this is early, but it is one of the things we have done to try to accommodate the growing number of morning car riders. We also attempt to close the car rider line at 7:35. We have to close it at some point to allow our 13-15 teachers who are on car rider duty time to get back to their classrooms to support instruction by 7:40. Please help us attain this goal as we move into fall weather.
As usual, we have a lot going on at GSES! Please review the information below and reach out with any questions.
All the best,
Joshua Todd
Principal
News and Updates
Can you believe we are already 50 days into the school year?! Time flies when you're having fun! We'll be celebrating the 50th Day of School this Wednesday, October 18th, with special 1950s-themed activities during specials and fun learning opportunities happening around GSES. Interested students are invited to wear 1950s attire for our special day of fun and learning.
Bentley Photography will be at GSES this Friday, October 20th for Picture Retake Day. If your child was absent on 9/20 or has moved into our district since 9/20, please also plan to have his/her picture taken on Friday for our school yearbook.
We are excited to reveal our 2023-24 CLAW T-SHIRT DESIGN! As you know, each GSES student and staff member is part of a color team or CLAW. Students earn reward tickets for their CLAWS by showing positive behaviors related to our PBIS PAWS expectations--Pride, Attitude, Work, and Safety. Students are encouraged to wear their Claw Color on our monthly Claw Spirit Days, during Panther Playoffs, and for special GSES events. Shirts are on sale now through November 1st. Click HERE to order yours through School Pay. (When placing your order, be sure to select your child's correct CLAW color. If you're not sure, your child's teacher can tell you what color to order. If your child was a GSES student last year, their Claw color is the same as their previous tribe color.)
Families may now sign up to join your child for lunch at GSES. Please read the guidelines at the top of the form carefully before signing up. Click HERE to select your spot.
We are excited about this year's GSES Student Technology Competition for 3rd-5th grade students. If your child is planning to participate, please make sure that you have completed the competition interest form by Tuesday, October 17th so that we can directly communicate information to participating families. Students will present their projects and speeches at our GSES school competition on Friday, November 10th. Students have the opportunity to compete in 14 various categories by submitting an individual or partner project. The website linked below provides detailed information on each of the 14 categories with examples of some previously-completed projects. The project can be something your child starts fresh this year or improves from a previous year. We will even be working on some projects in our classes at school. Please contact Mrs. Gassman (monica.gassman@jcss.us) if you have any questions.
Yearbooks are on sale now. Click HERE to order. You will need to enter the following passcode for GSES: 101485563232668. Receive a 10% discount if you order by October 31st.

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS
Mindset Winners
For the past four weeks, we have explored the "Passion First" mindset. Students have learned to explore their interests, identify their strengths, be authentic, and use their passions to help others. We are honored to spotlight one staff member and one student who represents this important Mindset. Congratulations to GSES special education teacher Mrs. Lydia Lankford and 3rd grader Andrew Stephens. Here's what their nominees had to say about these great Panthers:
Andrew knows what he is passionate about and enjoys spending time pursuing his passions. Andrew loves Elvis and his music. For a school dress-up day where students were encouraged to dress for success, Andrew was dressed from head to toe as Elvis. He was proudly wearing something he was passionate about and enjoyed telling everyone about his passion.
Mrs. Lankford is a dedicated teacher who is very passionate about her students and the best way to support them. She goes above and beyond to help her students and other teachers. Mrs. Lankford met a fellow teacher at school on the weekend and spent countless hours helping her rearrange her room to best support her students. She also goes to great lengths on picture day to make sure her students have the very best photo possible!
Immigration Simulation Brings Past to Present
5th graders had a fun day of learning when they participated in the annual GSES Immigration Simulation on Wednesday, October 11th. In social studies, 5th grade students have been learning about what life was like for immigrants to America in the early 1900s and the important role immigrants played in the development and growth of the United States. The simulation took students through the experience of arriving at Ellis Island including medical inspections, baggage inspections, legal interviews, currency exchange, purchasing train tickets, and making difficult decisions about whether or not to keep families united. Once they arrived in America, students developed communities with other people emigrating from their same native countries as they tried out jobs that were common among immigrant populations, such as construction, assembly line jobs, mining, restaurant work, and other jobs. Students enjoyed this experience that brought history to life! Thanks to our great team of fifth grade teachers and support staff who planned this learning experience for our students. (You can view more photographs on our GSES Facebook page.)
2nd Grade Camp-Out Celebrates Narrative Writing Growth
2nd graders enjoyed their annual Class Camp-Out on Wednesday, October 11th. Class campouts gave students a chance to celebrate their growth as writers this year. Students have learned narrative writing techniques during the first quarter of school, and they wrapped up the quarter just before Fall Break by celebrating their success with campfire stories as their class publishing parties. Many classes also participated in other camp-themed learning experiences throughout the week. We are proud to see our 2nd graders growing great writing skills and showing off their hard work! (Check out our GSES Facebook page for even more fun pictures!)
