A Message from Admin
I hope everyone is enjoying a nice Labor Day weekend. The first month of school is packed with establishing routines, teaching expectations, and getting our kiddos used to the daily aspects of elementary school life. Milestones results from Spring 2023 have been sent home and soon we will send home Acadience and MAP data from the most recent testing window.
Our kids have been busy and engaged in many stimulating activities. If you do not already follow us on social media, please do! We post pictures of our kids in various settings almost every day. Many of these activities are featured in this newsletter, but if you would like to see them in real time, follow us on Facebook.
If you are the parent of a Pre-K student at GSES, please plan to attend the Parent Pre-K Orientation on Thursday at 5:30. Here you will learn about Pre-K curriculum, class routines, and ways you can be invovled with us. Also taking place on Thursday is our GSES PTO Meeting at 6:30. At the meeting, you will have a chance to meet the PTO Board, sign up for volunteer opportunities, purchase fall spirit wear, and learn about events for the year.
I would also like to give shout outs to all of our community sponsors who have contributed to our school recently. This week, Miranda Gill Realty sponsored a staff snack cart for our teachers to enjoy a few goodies after a hard week’s work. The Keith Harbin Agency Farmers Insurance also sponsored a Chic-Fil-A breakfast for our staff on their professional learning day on Friday. Lastly, thank you to The Sign Brothers, specifically Jason Franks, for providing the PBIS Teacher of the Month signs. Each month we draw names and award three teachers who have had perfect attendance for the month with front row parking in what used to be reserved for administration. We love our GSES community and we could not be successful without you! Thank you for investing in our students and our staff!
Despite changes to morning drop offs, the new routines have become more effective as we have moved through the first month of school. To give you some idea of volume, almost half of our nearly 1200 students arrive by golf cart or as car riders each morning.
As a reminder, teachers begin instruction at 7:40. That is the same as it was last year. Please be mindful that we close the car rider drop off lanes at 7:35. Anyone pulling into the car rider lane after 7:35 will be re-routed to drop off at the front of the building. Vehicles that are in line by 7:35 will be allowed to drop off in the back of the building.
It is important that you understand why we require this of car riders. We typically have between 12-15 staff opening doors in the morning, and those staff members have classes to teach after their morning duties. They need time to finish opening doors, pick up all the safety cones to make room for afternoon buses, and get to their classrooms by 7:40, which is why we have to have a cut off time in the morning. There will be no staff to receive students in the back after this time, which again, is why we need you to pull to the front of the building after 7:35. We also ask that you please be mindful of your speed and the school staff attempting to direct traffic.
This year we have started allowing drop-offs in the car rider line beginning at 6:50. I know this is early, but we have had around 40-50 vehicles come through at that time, which has helped to ease some of the later traffic. You certainly do not have to come that early, but know that it is an option.
Thank you for your continued support of our school. Education is a difficult but rewarding profession and we love our kids and our community!

Principal

Staff Shout-Out!
The great news for staff recognitions continued this week as one of our own rockstar GSES bus drivers was announced as one of three district finalists for JCSS Bus Driver of the Year! Congratulations to Mr. Pete McClellan. He is well-loved by GSES students, staff, and families, and we are excited to see Mr. Pete receive this great honor!
Spotlight on: PBIS
At GSES we know that creating a safe and positive learning environment is a top priority to help our students prepare for academic success. We implement PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) initiatives to help make this happen. One helpful tool is our PAWS matrix, which defines student expectations using the acronym PAWS. PAWS reminds students how to show PRIDE at school, maintain a positive ATTITUDE, do their best WORK, and promote SAFETY at school. Check out our matrix HERE to find out what our expectations are for students at GSES.
Did you know that a collective group of panthers is called a CLAW?! This year, we’re showing our school spirit by rebranding our PBIS teams from tribes to CLAWS! We’ll still have six fun and exciting color teams competing to win the coveted monthly prize, but this year the teams in the running will be the Red Claw, Orange Claw, Yellow Claw, Green Claw, Blue Claw, and Purple Claw. How cool is that?! Students win the CLAW OF THE MONTH by working together to be the color team who earns the most PBIS reward tickets during that month. Students earn reward tickets by "getting caught" following PAWS expectations.
We were very excited to have our Claw Reveal ceremonies last Thursday. Students who are new to GSES found out during their grade level ceremonies what color Claw they would be joining this year. It was fun to see our students run to their teams and be welcomed by the returning members of their group! Our staff members just started giving out reward tickets on Thursday, and we already have so many in our Claw Competition Containers! Great job, Panthers! We are looking forward to lots of fun and friendly competition with our new CLAW-mates this year. You can view even more pictures of our fun Claw Reveal ceremonies on our GSES Facebook page HERE.
Congratulations to our first ticket winner of the year, 2nd grader Savannah, a new member of the YELLOW CLAW!
Have you ever heard your child singing the GSES PAWS song? It's one of our favorites! We play it on our morning news show as a reminder to students of the expectations of GSES Panthers, and everyone loves singing along. Our song recently got an upgrade as students recorded a new sing-along version, and staff worked together to create a music video to accompany the catchy tune. Check our amazing Panthers making their music video debut!
Color us Smarter!
Over the last two weeks, our kindergarten students have been learning about colors in many fun and creative ways. They learned a color song each day to help them recognize and read color words and used emergent readers to practice reading and writing color words. As a culminating activity on Rainbow Day, students made rainbow hair to match the emergent reader texts they created on their own.
Students also loved enjoying and investigating many color-themed books throughout the week, such as Llama, Llama Red Pajama, Green Pants, Cat's Colors, and 10 Black Dots.
Thanks to many of our students and staff who also dressed in the Color of the Day to help our students explore the many shades of colors!
Manners Par-TEA
3rd grade spent time this week learning about etiquette and manners while dining. They discussed appropriate conversations, hospitable behavior, appopriate attire, how to pass food, and even what to do with their napkins when they leave the table. Students also learned how to speak respectfully to peers, even in non-dining situations. Families, be sure to ask your 3rd grader what he or she learned and let your child know you want to see the same positive behaviors at home too. On Friday, students enjoyed a Manners Tea Party to apply what they had learned (while enjoying some delicious treats, of course)!
Weather Watchers
Over the past few weeks 4th grade scientists have been learning all about weather, and between our record-breaking temperatures and nearby hurricanes affecting our local forecast, it's been a great time to explore. Highlights from their unit this week included building shaving cream clouds to model what causes precipitation in the water cycle while collecting data about cloud capacity, as well as making cloud model flip books.
Let's GLOW!
Our teachers love making math fun! This week, Ms. Menard's 5th graders had fun classifying quadrilaterals and reviewing what they have learned about 2-D shapes under the black light. It's fun to GLOW what you KNOW!
Gum Springs Gizmos Back in Action
The Gum Springs Gizmos are back at it for the 2023 season! At their first practice of the season this week, the team learned about this year’s competition theme and started building missions for the LEGO Robotics board. Our very own Principal, Mr. Todd even joined in on the fun at our first meeting. Watch out for exciting things coming soon from the Gizmos this year!
We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do!
We had fun cheering on the Jackson County High School Panthers for their America-out game last Friday! Thanks to Jackson County High School Athletics for donating 4 free tickets to our most-spirited students. Congratulations to this week’s spiriti contest winners—McKenzie, Ryder, Lily, and Memphis!
PANTHER SUPPORTERS
We are excited to welcome two new Partners in Education to our GSES team this week: Miranda Gill Realty and Farmers Insurance - Keith Harbin Agency. Thank you for supporting our school!
Our teachers and staff had a busy day of professional learning and planning while students were out on Friday. Thanks to Farmers Insurance - Keith Harbin Agency for sponsoring breakfast for our staff. It was just the fuel we needed for a busy and productive day. We appreciate you!
Thanks to Miranda Gill Realty for sponsoring a surprise Snack Cart for our GSES staff this week. It was truly a great treat for a busy day that made lots of staff members smile! Miranda Gill Realty provides special incentives for teachers, first responders and military (active or retired).
Thank you to the following local businesses for becoming GSES PTO sponsors this year!
Our staff members who had perfect attendance for the month of August were celebrated at this week's staff meeting. Three lucky winners’ names were chosen through a lottery drawing to take over admin parking spaces for the month. Congratulations Mrs. Harley, Mrs. Miyake, and Mrs. Cope! Thank you to The Sign Brothers, and specifically Mr. Jason Franks, for providing new Teacher of the Month signs.
