News & Updates
Mr. Joshua Todd was approved as the next principal of Gum Springs Elementary School on Thursday night by the Jackson County School System Board of Education. Mr. Todd is currently an assistant principal at Jackson County High School and will begin at GSES this summer. We look forward to the leadership and guidance from Mr. Todd and ask our community to welcome him to our school!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Our amazing families, unbelievable PTO, and generous community have truly showered our staff with love for Teacher Appreciation Week! Thank you for all the surprises, snacks drinks, flowers, gifts, and especially the sweet hand-written notes. We have certainly felt appreciated this week and grateful for your support!
We are looking forward to our Drama Club's production of Aladdin this week! Students will have the opportunity to see the show during school on Thursday and Friday this week. Families and community members are invited to join us for the evening production on Thursday, May 11 at 6:00 P.M. They have been hard at work for months, and we know it will be an amazing show!
Georgia Milestones (GMAS) assessments continue this week for 4th grade students. Click HERE for more information. Our students have worked very hard this year, and we are confident they will do great!
If your child is planning to try out for the GS Gizmos LEGO League on Tuesday afternoon, please plan to pick him/her at 5:00 P.M. at the back of the school in the bus loop. Only students whose parents gave permission for them to stay after school by completing the Google form will be allowed to stay for tryouts.
Parents are welcome to come cheer for your child at this year’s Field Day festivities from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. (See dates on calendar.) GSES Field Days will take place on the WJMS football field. Due to the number of classes who will be participating in Field Day at the same time, we ask that all spectators remain on the track or in the bleachers. NO VISITORS WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE FIELD. (We ask this for the safety of our students.) Please know that parking is extremely limited at GSES on school days, and no parking is allowed along the cut-through road between GSES and WJMS. Students must remain with their teacher during the event. If you would like to check out your child after Field Day, teachers will have sign-out sheets available at Field Day dismissal. Our staff has worked hard to plan an awesome Field Day for our students, and we appreciate your cooperation to ensure it is a safe and FUN day!
We are excited to recognize our students' many accomplishments at this year's Award's Day celebrations! Guests are welcome to join us. Please add the dates on the schedule below to your calendars. Notifications will be sent home on May 10 to families of students who will be receiving an award.
All student medications must be picked up from the clinic by 3:00 P.M. on May 23rd. All medication left in the clinic will be destroyed on May 24th. Parents may choose to pick up medication earlier than this time but would need to leave enough for the remainder of the current school year.
Friday, May 5th was School Lunch Hero Day. This day is dedicated to the men and women who make our school cafeterias great places to be! GSES is lucky to have cafeteria team members who not only care about our students' nutritional needs but also genuinely care about them as students. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to GSES!

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHTS
MINDSET WINNERS
Congratulations to our Mindset Heroes of the month, 3rd grade teacher Missy Brunen and 3rd grade student Ellena Fairbank.
Ellena was nominated because of her amazing attitude and work ethic. She takes on challenges with a positive attitude and isn't afraid to struggle a little because she knows the struggle is making her stronger. Ellena's perseverance, love of learning, and ginormous heart make her a force to be reckoned with!
Likewise, 3rd grade teacher Missy Brunen lives "The Time is Now" mindset every day! She truly embodies the idea that "we should harness the power of every moment by taking purposeful action." Mrs. Brunen is very skilled at knowing the individual needs of each of her students and providing the just-right challenge for them to grow. We love her go-getter attitude and how much she truly LOVES being a teacher.
Super Scientists
All of our Pre-K classes have enjoyed some fun science learning this week.
Mrs. Duke's class enjoyed reading the book "Mud" and investigating the different types of dirt in their own backyards. They had fun seeing how each soil type created different types of mud (and playing in it too, of course!).
Mrs. Rock's Pre-K class has enjoyed learning about SPACE! They especially enjoyed eating like astronauts do!
Lyle's Pre-K Pals have been raising caterpillars for several weeks, and this week they were so excited to release BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES!
A Step Back in Time
Mrs. Ellis’ 4th grade class has been learning about abolition and women's suffrage. They were excited to get a surprise visit from Sojourner Truth yesterday! She told students about her life and the hard work she put in fighting for these two movements. (Thanks to our sweet Mrs. Burns for helping history come alive for our students. )
Book Buddy Builders
Ms. Carter and Mrs. Mitas’ Kindergarten+4th grade Book Buddies tackled recently tackled a math challenge together. Student pairs created 3-D shapes using gum drops and toothpicks. Kindergartners showed what they had learned about combining 2-D shapes to make 3-D shapes, and 4th graders explored the different types of angles found within the shapes.
